Bestsellers on Five Books
Napoleon: A Life 🎯 A bestselling book on Five Books in 2024 Interest in Napoleon Buonaparte, the Corsican soldier who became emperor of France, is perennial on Five Books, with most buyers gravitating towards Napoleon: A Life by British historian Andrew Roberts. 2023 has seen an even bigger bump than usual. Sales of this book have doubtless been driven by the new Ridley Scott movie, which has become notorious for its lack of historical accuracy.
Books on Modern French History
Before we get on to the books, have there been any particularly big fights over French history in the current presidential election battle? To an extraordinary extent, yes, because of Eric Zemmour, who’s a slightly eccentric candidate, but not a completely marginal figure. It’s almost as if academic history is his main interest. He made his reputation writing for the Figaro, and I used to read him every week.
Theodore Zeldin · Love and Crime · LRB 6 March 1980
Modern imaginative literature has two favourite themes: love and crime. Most people accept that love is a mystery full of twists and surprises that are not predictable by science or reason. It is natural that its infinite variations should be probed most interestingly by novelists rather than by experts and statisticians: no one has dared set up a Chair of Amorology.
Stratagems of Ignorance
Many years ago, in the course of the oral examination of my doctoral degree, a criticism was made of my thesis. ‘You have not mentioned the Programme of Nancy,’ said the illustrious professor. I replied: ‘What is the Programme of Nancy?’ Embarrassed, he confessed he did not know. He turned to the other examiner, who also did not know. Were they frauds? I have always felt that history has been both unjust and too kind to the Don’t Knows. They are treated with contempt in public opinion polls.
On the Subject of Happiness
I have just published a work of fiction, Happiness. I did not plan this voyage of the imagination in my spare time, as a jaunt to distract me from more serious labours. It is the culmination of all I have done and written. I could not go on accumulating learning for ever: I would never have enough. So I have spent most of the years since my last book thinking: I withdrew into long periods of silence. But my purpose was not to withdraw from the world.
Hannah Dawson - Like a Camel’s Fart
Like a Camel’s Fart The Hidden Pleasures of Life: A New Way of Remembering the Past and Imagining the Future By Theodore Zeldin MacLehose Press 429pp £20 order from our bookshop Count the women! It has become a habit of our times. How many women are there in Parliament? How many sit on company boards? How many review books? The counting habit irritates those who take refuge in the idea of meritocracy and gnaws at those who think that equal representation matters.
