Chris Allen
Chris Allen’s Biography
I didn't set out to become a journalist. I set out to understand why things that should work don't and why the people responsible for fixing them so rarely do.
I've spent years working inside municipal systems, watching decisions get made, unmade, and buried in committee minutes that nobody reads. I've seen how institutional language is used not to communicate but to obscure. How accountability gets deferred indefinitely through process. How the gap between what institutions say publicly and what the record actually shows can be vast and how rarely anyone bothers to measure it.
That gap is where The Old Guardian lives.
TOG is an independent Canadian investigative journalism outlet built on a simple principle: facts before narrative. No parties. No tribes. No ideological framing. Just the record, followed wherever it leads regardless of who it implicates or how uncomfortable the destination.
I cover Canadian governance, education policy, institutional accountability, and the intersection of public money and private interest. My work focuses on what the documents show, what the data reveals, and what the people in charge would prefer you never asked about.
My flagship investigation into the Toronto District School Board examined governance failures, spending patterns, and the architecture of institutional self-protection that keeps school boards answerable to no one. The series generated significant reader engagement and prompted formal responses from within the system, which is when you know the work is landing.
When Ontario centralized education oversight power through Queen's Park, I followed the paper trail while the broader media debate focused on politics. What the record showed was more troubling than the headlines suggested.
I've filed Access to Information requests, pulled corporate registry filings, traced land ownership through provincial records, and mapped the distance between official statements and documented reality. I use primary sources. I verify before I publish. I correct when I'm wrong.
TOG operates under a governing doctrine I developed called the North Star Accord, a rigorous internal framework for evidence classification, source verification, and editorial integrity. Every finding is classified as Evidence, Proof, or Faith before it moves toward publication. Nothing exits the process as "kinda true."
I am a member of the Canadian Association of Journalists and Investigative Reporters and Editors. The Old Guardian is a registered Ontario sole proprietorship.
I believe independent journalism without institutional backing, advertiser pressure, or editorial interference is not just viable. It's necessary. Legacy media consolidation, newsroom closures, and the collapse of local accountability reporting have left a gap in Canadian public life that someone has to fill.
I'm filling it.
