Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My high school and college instructors are all too familiar with my overuse of Liquid Paper and Wite-Out correction fluid!

How is social media changing news?

We need a social-media profit model that neither erodes investigative journalism nor amplifies sensationalism.

What's your favorite social network?

Nextdoor has the potential to unite local communities and reduce the formation of ideological bubbles.

Who do you wish followed you?

I'm pleased to say that important people in my niche already follow me, although my voice could be louder and more persistent.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

My high school didn't have a newspaper, but I was both news editor and copy editor for my college newspaper, and co-editor of the yearbook.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I was the first writer at Sojourners, an evangelical magazine, to interview experts on gay rights and advocacy for hate crimes law.

What's your favorite drink?

My doctors tell me to say my favorite drink is unsweetened green tea, but evil forces whisper "Mello Yello Zero" in my ear.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Despite living in the West, I read The Washington Post where my former colleagues help ensure quality journalism.
