The Ritual Humiliation of Airport Security – The Daily Sceptic
Amidst the flood of absurdities and violations known as ‘the pandemic’, much has been lost to memory. One BBC headline from March 1st 2021, for example, will read like new to many people: “Covid: Japan asks China to stop anal tests on its citizens.” The procedure, the article helpfully explains, involves inserting a cotton swab 3–5 cm, or 1.2–2 inches, for those wondering, into the anus before “gently” rotating it back out.
Gunnar Kaiser (1976–2023): In Memory of the Conscience of a Nation – The Daily Sceptic
Can the spring of 2020 be more succinctly described than as a period of confected panic? For months, news coverage was dominated by rolling death counts, hysterical statistics and the most portentous images. Who can forget that picture from Wuhan of a man lying flat on his back, apparently dead, surrounded by immaculately placed health workers in hazmats? In contrast to previous national crises – one thinks of the war-time slogan “keep calm and carry on” – mortal dread was practically compulsory.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Prophecy
The Good The exploration of this game is by far its strongest aspect. There is just something fulfilling about running through a level utilising all of Lara Croft's skills (climbing, long jumps and hanging from ledges). Lara's skills are brought to life by the amount of animation put into her character, as her character is a 3d model. The 3d model also helps to make Lara stand out from the background, making sure you don't lose her in the background.
The Dystopian Age of the Mask
How Ernst Jünger predicted the ubiquity of masks Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) has Alphas, Betas, and Epsilon Semi-Morons – genetically engineered classes with uniform clothing and uniform opinions. Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948) has the Thought Police and Newspeak. While Zamyatin’s We (1921) has numbers instead of people – D-503, I-330, O-90: vowels for females, consonants for males.
New semester brings new opportunities
For many returning college students a new semester might mean a fresh start, an exciting continuation or might even be an anxious unknown. Whichever you or your student finds themselves in, it’s always worth hearing this reminder: For many of us college was a time we look back on fondly or even sometimes begrudgingly as we make student loan payments.
