Conserved and Novel Mouse CD8 T Cell Epitopes within SARS-CoV-2 Spike Receptor Binding Domain Protein Identified following Subunit Vaccination
Bennett J. Davenport, Thomas E. Morrison, Ross M. Kedl and Jared Klarquist J Immunol June 1, 2021, 206 (11) 2503-2507; DOI: https://doi.org/10.4049/jimmunol.2100195 Abstract The prior existence of human ACE2 protein–expressing mice used to study SARS-CoV and the rapid development of mouse-adapted virus strains have allowed the study of SARS-CoV-2 in mice, even as we are still learning about its natural pathology in humans.

Pathogenic chikungunya virus evades B cell responses to establish persistence
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes large outbreaks of acute and chronic musculoskeletal disease. To investigate mechanisms of CHIKV clearance and persistence, we performed studies in mice with an attenuated CHIKV strain (181/25) and its pathogenic parent strain (AF15561). Whereas AF15561 infection of WT mice resulted in viral persistence in joint-associated tissue, 181/25 was cleared within 4 weeks.
Ly6Chi monocytes control acute Ross River virus infection through an IRF7-dependent mechanism that can be counteracted by determinants in nsP1
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Ross River virus (RRV) are mosquito-transmitted alphaviruses that cause large epidemics of debilitating musculoskeletal disease. Monocytes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of these infections; however, their specific roles are not clearly defined. To investigate the role of inflammatory Ly6Chi CCR2+ monocytes in alphavirus pathogenesis, we used CCR2-DTR transgenic mice, enabling depletion of these cells by administering diphtheria toxin (DT).
Chronic chikungunya virus infection disrupts the architecture and function of draining lymphoid tissue
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes large outbreaks of rheumatologic disease, resulting in chronic disease symptoms in up to two-thirds of infected individuals. Studies in humans and animal models suggest that CHIKV infection persists in musculoskeletal tissues, although the mechanisms are unclear. The pathogenic clinical isolate AF15561 persists in joint tissue of WT mice, while the attenuated strain 181/25 is cleared.
