The first 2020 Census population counts will be released by the U.S. Census Bureau today. These counts will be used for apportionment, which is a process that determines how many seats in the U.S. House of Representatives each state will have for the next 10 years. This first data release will include population totals for the United States, each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
How We Complete the Census When Demographic and Housing Characteristics Are Missing Although we strive to obtain all demographic and housing data from every individual in the census, missing data are part of every census process.
Each decade we are asked, “Why don’t you just use the information the government already has about me for the census? Why ask me again?” In some ways, we do. We regularly work with information from other government agencies to make our statistics more accurate. For example, we have used information from federal, state, and local government agencies for decades to improve our census address list and to create population estimates.
