What luxury buyers actually want beyond the address this fall
The luxury market remains resilient, but the strategies that worked in the past may not be enough for the remainder of 2026, Thomas Wright writes. The luxury real estate market heading into fall is not defined by a lack of demand. It is defined by a higher bar for earning that demand. Affluent buyers remain active, but they are increasingly deliberate about where, what and why they buy.
Opinion: Utah needs more homes on the market — Congress can help Original
There is no question that the buzzword for this year’s midterm election is “affordability.” Affordability means a lot of things to a lot of different people, but a huge component here in Utah is home prices. Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the country. Families are moving here for opportunity. Businesses and new industries are coming here because of our strong economy, talented workforce and quality of life.

The Stranger (Wright, 2022)
Every year at the New Zealand International Film Festival, I take a swing on a few titles I don’t know much about and which seem to have only a little buzz around them, in the hopes of finding a hidden gem. Usually these searches don’t amount to much. This year, on a sparsely attended Sunday evening in chilly midwinter, the lights went down on Thomas M. Wright’s The Stranger, one such swing, and it quickly emerged as one of my favourite films of the year.

Thomas Wright: Zoning laws, fees hinder Utah’s housing market
Editor’s note: This is the second in a three-part series by Thomas Wright discussing Utah’s affordable housing crisis. Read the second part here. Salt Lake City is expected to debate a proposal in November to allow zoning for row homes and tiny homes around Liberty Park to offset the home shortage that’s become even worse with the COVID-19 pandemic. Updating zoning laws to balance the needs of individual residents with population growth is a great way to impact housing availability and cost.

12 Supernatural Teen Dramas by Tomatometer
Ever since the first Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! villain shook his fist at the gang and exclaimed, “I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids,” TV has tried to recreate the magical, mystical drama of that beloved animated series (though Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby actually debunked a lot of its otherworldly activity).

Evidently the state of American moviemaking has regressed to the point where all low- to mid-budget movies made at the periphery of the mainstream must be either triumphs or failures, as though all it takes to make an artistically significant film is merely an artistic vision.
The Spiritualist Convictions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Even the most devoted Baker Street Irregular or Baker Street Babe must have trouble keeping up with the frenetic celebration of Sherlock Holmes and his creator Arthur Conan Doyle—the movies and TV series, the volumes of letters and diaries, the special editions of the canonical stories, the multiple collections of “new” cases, and the biographical and critical studies galore.
The Little Sick | The Weekly Standard
The Big Sick is a movie about a struggling comedian from a Pakistani family and his graduate-student waif of a girlfriend. They break up. She gets a mysterious infection and is put in a medically induced coma. He must deal with her parents, who are angry with him for the way he treated her, and his own parents, who are angry that he won’t accept a Pakistani girl of their choosing. The Big Sick is nice. There are some good lines. The scenes with the Pakistani family are charming.
Republicans Have Overlooked Reagan's Origin Story
As somebody who makes a living, in part, by writing history, I have a confession against interest: I am not a big fan of biographies. My main problem is the constant interruption of narrative flow. Real life moves along multiple tracks simultaneously, but a biographer can only discuss one item at a time, so, for instance, a discussion of Alexander Hamilton’s constitutional theory has to be interrupted by personal news.
Intimate relationship quality, self-concept and illness acceptance in those with multiple sclerosis

What's at Stake in the American Empire Debate
What's at Stake in the American Empire Debate Scholars of world politics enjoy well-developed theories of the consequences of unipolarity or hegemony, but have little to say about what happens when a state's foreign relations take on imperial properties. Empires, we argue, are characterized by rule through intermediaries and the existence of distinctive contractual relations between cores and their peripheries.
Donald Trump wants America to withdraw from the world
Editors' Note: The president enjoys his or her greatest power in foreign policy, writes Tom Wright—and a Trump administration would pose the greatest shock to international peace and stability since the 1930s. This post originally appeared in the Financial Times. The damage a President Trump could do to the American republic is thankfully limited. A president is not a king. There are laws and a court to enforce them. There is Congress to block him. If a president breaks the law, he can be impeached.

Medicine in literature: Top non-fiction books
In the second of a two-part series, our judges and former winners choose their all-time favourite non-fiction books that explore medicine. 'The Memory Chalet' by Tony Judt. This brilliant historian was stricken with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and though it paralysed his body and brought his early death, it made him hungry to communicate his insights into history and politics in our time, to say the huge things which were most urgent. 'The Good Story' by J M Coetzee and Arabella Kurtz.
Medicine in literature: Top fiction books
The Wellcome Book Prize celebrates medicine in literature. In the first of a two-part series, we ask some of our judges and former winners to pick their all-time favourite fiction books that touch on this fascinating topic. Books to help you understand the world in 2016
The world is changing, sometimes incredibly fast. But one constant is that books can help us understand the world and our place in it. Some of our 2016 judges and a former winner offer their picks to make sense of it all this year. 'The Lightless Sky: An Afghan refugee boy's journey of escape to a new life in Britain' by Gulwali Passarlay. An extraordinary account illuminating what drives many refugee journeys to Britain. 'Number 11' by Jonathan Coe.
Books to cure the winter blues
Escape from the frosty mornings and dark nights with these warming recommendations from some of our judges and past winners. 'Black Narcissus' by Rumer Godden. It's nothing like the Powell and Pressburger film (which Godden didn't like). A beautiful, subtle novel about nuns in the 1930s, set in the Himalayan mountains near Darjeeling. Bright and warm - though never sentimental - for dark days. 'Down the Rabbit Hole' by Juan Pablo Villalobos. Another hot place - Mexico this time.
