Thorsten Schroeder’s Biography

Thorsten has a master in economics and politics from the University of Cologne and attended the Kölner Journalistenschule in Cologne, Germany. He worked as a freelance writer for the German business paper Handelsblatt, the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) and Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. In 2010, he moved to New York to write about US politics, media, technology, and the economy for German and Swiss media, among them Die Zeit, Zeit Online, NZZ am Sonntag, Business Punk, and Wired Germany.

He covered the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the aftermath of the earthquake and hurricane in Haiti, the beginning of Black Lives Matter in Ferguson, the drought in Kansas and the rebuilding of Detroit after the financial crisis. In February 2016, he became the main US correspondent for the online edition of the German weekly Die Zeit, for which he covered the US election.

In recent years, he became more and more interested in web development and technology and its impact on journalism. He is working on his side project, “The Full Story”, which compares the way liberal and conservative news present their stories, and shows the bias in media.
