What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job was working for the Sunday Herald in Glasgow as an online editor.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No. I'm not that old. Not quite.

How is social media changing news?

Its making it harder.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Ford Prefect, writer and researcher of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

The often contradictory urge to engage with the world and write about it.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Docs, and now I'm doing a podcast Audacity. Audio means you have more software and kit to carry something I'm getting used to

Who do you wish followed you?

I have some great followers. Always blows my mind that my favourite musicians Prefuse 73 follows me. Likes architecture apparently.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I love to describe what something looks like, why its there, how it got there, what should be done with it etc.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No I didn't.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A story about the returning of the architve of Spanish Republicans to Barcelona. It was taken by Franco,. It was a long time ago I wrote tha

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get a side hustle.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Best time to pitch me is early. Please don't pitch me if its a US story. I write for American publications but I'm based in Europe.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

You should write something about Carmen Kass she's standing as a MEP. Back when i was a stringer in Eastern Europe.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I never read so far down into a pitch to find out.

What's your favorite drink?

All the booze.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Playing football!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love the Weekend FT as well as The Spectator, The Critic, The Guardian Review.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That buildings are easy to read.
