What could we learn from team sports? Cohesion as a lens to understand research teams in health professions education
1 INTRODUCTION Research in health professions education (HPE) is increasingly conducted within collaborative teams.1 Yet, despite this collective orientation, we know surprisingly little about how to intentionally build, support and sustain high-functioning research teams. The success of interdisciplinary teams depends on more than simply assembling capable individuals; if team performance were merely a sum of its parts, few research collaborations would flounder.
Redefining social accountability for medical schools - beyond codes and contracts to measuring contributions
Abstract The World Health Organization (WHO) defined ‘social accountability for medical schools’ in 1995; yet 30 years later, many remain concerned that medical schools are not living up to societal expectations. In this article, we first place the WHO’s definition into historical context, then we contrast the WHO social ‘contract’, where schools are expected to demonstrate value for money, with the more altruistic ‘code’ that had been put forward previously by Abraham Flexner.
Navigating early career intentions: A qualitative study of influences on specialty choices for medical students
1 INTRODUCTION Medical students are required to make consequential career-related decisions early in their undergraduate training, often before they have sufficient clinical experiences or opportunities to develop a grounded understanding of the profession. These early choices, including the selection of summer electives, research opportunities and clerkship choices, carry implications for residency competitiveness and long-term career trajectories.
A taxonomy of research relationships
1 INTRODUCTION Research is fundamentally a human endeavour. Considering research as a social activity means acknowledging that human relationships can come into play in how we conduct research and engage with other researchers. In the process of conducting research, we often banter with colleagues to help refine our ideas, build research teams to execute studies, respond to feedback from journal and grant reviewers and publicly share our work at scientific conferences and symposia.
An imperative for transforming health professions education
Recent shifts in health professions education (HPE), particularly growing emphasis on social accountability, are driving a transformation to better align education, research and service with evolving health needs.1-4 At the same time, given increasing concerns about finite resources, any such effort at change will be heavily influenced by sustainability issues. Sustainability and social accountability, however, are not opposing forces.
Pathways, journeys and experiences: Integrating curricular activities related to social accountability within an undergraduate medical curriculum
1 INTRODUCTION Today, across global contexts, there is growing attention being paid by the governing bodies of academic institutions to higher education's role in society.1, 2 Following calls for fundamental changes in the organisation and structure of teaching and learning of future health professionals, education programs are undergoing curricular reform to better meet society's increasingly complex health care needs.3-6 This reform is based on the concept of social accountability (SA),...
