san diego: dialed in
Wednesday night was preview night of Comic-Con 2024. Admittedly, I've skipped out the past couple years because of COVID and whatnot, but I was ready to jump back into the action this year, at least to check things out. I haven't done a big photo post like this in ages and forgot that they reload newest to oldest, so give me a little grace because it took three attempts to get photos up at all without crashing my apps.

This has been a rough week. For many years, I've been a stay-up-late/sleep-in girl and that has been just fine for me. I'm used to sitting on my laptop and working until 4am and then sleeping until whenever I slept enough to do it all over again. But with Darren's new job, this week I was designated driver to get Toby to Rock n Roll Camp For (Teens) every day by 9am. That means up at 7am. That is EARLY for an insomniac like me.
Photos: The Raveonettes @ Music Box (Casbah Presents)
Seeing the Raveonettes live was a long-time coming as I've never crossed paths with them but have always wanted to see live. My good friend Daanon from AZ had seen them at a festival the week prior in northern NV and said it's time for me to see them... sold! It was much better than I ever expected, and bonus points for having killer but incredibly simple lighting; it goes a long way for making great photos!

There is so much happening this weekend, and next week is even more nutso, but I have to say, I was looking for Record Store Day stuff and I wasn't finding shit. Sure, I found the list of stuff available across all record stores, but it feels like maybe the store traffic is so intense that all the in-stores and live music that used to be associated with it are gone. Or I couldn't find them. Or I looked in the wrong places.

This show was super fun and what I'd consider a classic Casbah show where you have friends in each of the bands and they all are all killing it doing what they do best. The Schizophonics Dream Burglar
2019: A Year of Music in Photos
2019 was a banner year for live music in San Diego — and we've got the photos to prove it. 22 photos 1/22 It all kicked off in a huge way on Jan. 29, when thousands of San Diego fans turned out to say goodbye to Elton John during his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour stop at Pechanga Arena. The platinum-selling Grammy-winning legend treated fans to a 24-song mega-set that we'll never forget — see more photos from the show here.

I always think I post all the best things and events, but after doing my listings last week, consulting my 50+ sites and email and Facebook and such, I realized how many non-music things are always going on in town. I've been trying to include general sports stuff at Pechanga Arena, between The Seals, The Gulls, and The Fleet, but with all the film and movie stuff, museums and foundations and non-profits, it's just too much to pack into my listings.

Gorgon City played to a sold out Friday night crowd at the Observatory. The energy was exuberant. The crowd was super hyped. They had a couple guest singers come out right off the bat, and the crowd ate that right up, too.

I am so excited for tonight! In fact, it was one of those nights where I was up all night working just so I wouldn't have the cloud of email hovering over my head. Instead of sleeping this morning, Darren and I went on a nice bike ride to test out the Biria I'm likely going to purchase. Now I'm completely wiped out and ready to catch some sleep, but in a few hours I'll be all revved up. I hope to see some friendly faces tonight at the Casbah.

. Hailed as '...one of America's best-ever Psychedelic Syndacites' (Pitchfork), SOoA's sound is characterized mainly by drony guitars, epic kit work and understated vocals. More from Pitch Perfect: "Six Organs of Admittance's Ascent is the rollicking realization of the Six Organs full band, electric experience. Six Organs as an electric entity is not without precedent.

I know it's really ridiculous how backlogged I am on posting all this stuff, but I've been to some great shows lately and I figure better late than never. Aside from having been looking forward to seeing Blind Pilot and The Low Anthem, even now, almost a month later, I can say this was one of my favorite shows in recent memory. The show sold out and I remember looking around and wondering how all these people knew Blind Pilot...tv placement? a movie soundtrack? the bicycle tour?
