AI is about to disrupt millions of jobs. A century ago, America's answer was to build a new high school
Earlier this week, noted short-seller Carson Block predicted that AI-driven job losses could eliminate 15% of knowledge worker positions within three years — a disruption he warned could rival the worst economic crises in modern history. And just two weeks ago, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a sweeping policy memo doubling down on his warnings that AI will produce labor market disruptions larger and longer-lasting than any previous technological shift.

Now Experience matters but are older whales more desirable? Do they have better game? Scientists following humpback whales once brought to the brink of extinction in the South Pacific made a fascinating discovery: Older males were more likely to become fathers and younger males were less likely to do so. …

All the loudest voices are calling for everyone to oppose political violence.
Press enter or click to view image in full size But of course, they would, pretty much everyone who says we must not resort to political violence is a potential target of political violence. I don’t believe we are anywhere close to where political violence is an appropriate course of action, but I believe that it can be a legitimate tactic for political change when democracy fails and the plutocrats and mainstream media become repressive and autocratic.
One by One
Press enter or click to view image in full size That is how it must be done, how it will be done and it has to be done. It has already started. Like straws on a camel’s back or bricks in a wall. It is not a frog in a pot of water not noticing it is being cooked, no, every brick in the wall every straw on the camel’s back, every slight made, every freedom oppressed, they are noticed. One by one the oppression is alienating groups and individuals who used to support the oppression.
Why life science organizations are outsourcing facility services
Life science is an exacting industry. Labs, manufacturing plants, biomedical firms, and research institutions require meticulously controlled environments to ensure their innovations, studies, and pharmaceuticals are consistently reproducible, safe, and meet stringent regulatory standards. Facility services play a make-or-break role in helping fulfill these goals.
The Apartheid that nobody talks about.
Press enter or click to view image in full size It seems Mexico has been ruled by white people since the early 1800's, they did have one non-white president back then (he was assassinated), but they have all been white since. Most Mexicans are Native Americans or people of mix race like a good majority well over 50% but the Mexican political leadership has always been people that are predominately white (people of mostly European ancestry) even though they are minority of the population.
We must shutdown the Antidisenshitification regimes
Press enter or click to view image in full size Back in the 60's there was a word that I was told was the longest word: Antidisestablishmentarianism. It was actually an older word not a 60's ism but it was adopted to signal that the establishment was actively trying to undermine movements to break up the establishment, the elites grip on power. It was pointing to a counter counterculture movement. The antidisestablishmentarians were responsible for 4 dead in Ohio, the Kent State Massacre.
No Bust no Boom
I was talking with a friend today and we got too financial suff. Just a couple retired aerospace engineers bullshitting about our retirement accounts. He is more of a spreadsheet kind of guy, and I am more of the back of a napkin kind of engineer. One subject, soft-landing or recession. We both have been moving to a more risk-off position in our portfolios. Me, I started moving to money markets and bonds over a year ago. Him, just recently after the market recovered from the tariff scare.
Are you following writers who don’t write here anymore?
I just unfollowed a bunch of people I used to follow but who have not written a story on Medium for more than 2 years. Many of them have thousands of followers. I have to believe that with so many people following people who don’t write here anymore that the data and angorihms are being distorted. I also expect that a lot of the followers are not active on Medium. I wonder, is there a way for me to purge my followers of inactive accounts?
Would you believe me if I told you we are in a recession?
We are and have been in a recession since the end of 2021. The “Powers that Be” have been cooking the books. I mean it is not a secret, and it is not like the MAGA claim that the recent employment numbers faked. No, the book cooking is a long running, well know, accepted one. The official estimates of inflation under report the felt inflation for most people.
Abundant Fresh Water
Are you wondering where you should live. We are all stressed about natural disasters and climate change. Jobs are becoming harder and harder to find. The most important consideration when deciding where to live (long term) is how safe and secure is the water supply. Yeah, it would be nice to avoid hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and wildfires but life is miserable without unlimited tap water.
It is all just too damn complicated
I know I am a geezer, but I think even younger people think things have gotten too complicated. I think all the complication is part of society’s malaise. Part of MAGA is not so much make America Great again, but maybe a call to make life simple again. “I don’t believe in frettin’ or grievin’ Why mess around with strife?
Powell is out
I think it is obvious at this point, this is his last term if he even lasts until his term expires. Markets are forward looking, so, have the markets already priced in the change in leadership at the FED? You know buy the rumor, sell the news. The FED will be cutting rates, does it really matter if it is next month or next year. Way too much short term thinking. TEK
How Latin are Latinos anyway?
No disrespect intended, I would like as much feedback as I can get. I am racist, I am very curious about people's backgrounds. I notice people’s skin color and other features. I try to not discriminate. It seems to me that a lot of people who are labeled as Latino or Hispanic are Native Americans. Is there some stigma in Latin American countries regarding being mostly of Native American decent?
What about a UBI based on minimized carbon footprint
I have proposed this is the past without the connection to UBI but did highlight how it could provide and income to the poor. The idea is a carbon rationing scheme that operates at the consumer level. All consumer product purchases would require carbon credits collected at the time of purchase. All products would have a declared carbon footprint (required number of credits) marked on the product like food nutrition labels are now.
Thinking about transgender athletes
California Gov. Gavin Newsom called it “unfair” to allow transgender athletes to participate in female college and youth sports. I think he is wrong about this, they should be allowed to participate. I think the medals and records should make note of and differentiate for gender assigned at birth. If a sport has classes of participation segregated by gender it was done for a reason, and I think often that reason is still valid.
Sometimes I wonder if the FED even has a clue.
A study by the Kansas City Fed released Friday found the recent sentiment slump did not “meaningfully alter” its predictions of 2025 spending growth, noting the modest tie between how consumers feel and what they do. Others agree. “Meaningfully alter” are you kidding. Yes, most people have to spend every penny they have just to get by no matter how bad they feel about the economy.
Man, I hate this attitude.
Man, I hate this attitude. Don’t let them lure you into another purchase. “The cost of products from Nintendo and Uppababy could go up even more, so you may want to buy that item you’ve been holding out on now.” Don’t, don’t, don’t do it. Stop the consumer madness. TEK
Maybe the worst thing about Trump Tariffs
Maybe the worst thing about Trump Tariffs For me the worst thing is the whimsical nature of the whole thing. No clarity, no consistency, no logic, no commitment, no telling what's next. Up, down, sideways. Here today, gone tomorrow. Maybe this maybe that. WTF. TEK
For Emergency Supplies choose tuna packed in oil.
Do your own research but consider that tuna packed in water, the water is almost useless, low value. Tuna packed in oil, the oil is higher value. Sort of for the same reasons you would not choose it for non-emergency use. The oil adds fat and calories, something we normally try to avoid. In an emergeny extra fat and calories are a benefit. Also the oil, if separated and accumulated has other uses. It could be used for cooking or baking. It could also be used as a fuel, like lamp oil.
What if they knew all along and just pretended to no believe
What if they knew all along and just pretended to no believe Seriously, what if the billionaires and plutocratic oligarchic elites are fake deniers. What if they have known and believe (privately) that we are doomed but publicly deny it to have the longest possible semi normal existence. They are just milking it for all they can and hope they can streatch things out for as long as they will live. I mean, if there really is no fixing it, sort of makes sense. TEK
Awful, just f-ing awful
This is going to be hard to swallow. I read the headline “Expect Amazon prices to rise because of tariffs, CEO says.” So, rise they will up to whatever the market will bear. It will not be just Amazon, it will be everything. At this point the tariffs are irrelevant, the excuse has been provided, the trend established, the customer has been warned so they are now going to raise prices as much as they can get away with.
Out of Touch
Sitting with my thoughts and staring at my news feed I had this thought. If the Biden economy was so great (yes, the normal metrics said it was) but if it was so great but people felt like the economy sucked why would you tell the people to deny their lived experience and accept what the normal metrics said was good as being good. If my economy sucked but the numbers said the economy was great, I am sure I would want someone to change things, shake things up.
Coin Heist
Tim Knowles · Follow Just now -- In 2024, more than $2.2 billion was stolen from crypto platforms, a report by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis showed. How is this at all sustainable? How can exchanges loose this much and stay profitable? If they have the profits to cover this kind of loss, who are they ripping off for those huge profit? Who owns these exchanges and who regulates them? Inquiring minds want to know. TEK
Would the crimes of healthcare insurance companies have gotten any attention without Luigi Mangione
Would the crimes of healthcare insurance companies have gotten any attention without Luigi Mangione The title really says it all. Is the establishment’s hold on the media prevent the crimes of the rich and powerful corporate interests from being shown the light of day. Is there any other way beside vigilantism to bring about needed changes? TEK
Are the poor getting poorer?
Tim Knowles · Follow 1 min read · -- Oxfam reported “the number of people living in poverty has barely changed since 1990,” citing World Bank Data. There is no doubt the rich are getting richer, much richer. This is not avoidable. Even if you could raise taxes on the rich, very hard, confiscate their wealth, almost impossible, or just get them to give more of their money away, maybe some hope there, they would still be getting richer.
Patriarchy, what Patriarchy?
How high is the glass ceiling? Pretty high. It seems that women make almost all the important decisions. Dating aps, do I even need to explain? Raising the kids, again, do I need to explain? In the bedroom, don’t make me explain. Where to go on vacation. You tell me, who decides? Major purchases, maybe I need to explain. For couples, women are almost always consulted and often have the final say. Women actually make the majority of all consumer purchases. The Glass Ceiling.
Almost nothing worth reading
Tim Knowles · Follow 1 min read · -- Medium and the news on the web has almost nothing new on most days. I scroll and click and find mostly either trash or repeats. Yeah, the weather changes and markets go up and down but not much else changes. We had an election and after months and months of repetitive coverage and bad prognostications, now we get a raft of post mortum and Monday morning quarterbacking of little interest. Yeah, we have COP 29 or whatever, no real news there.
The Universe is not infinite.
Tim Knowles · Follow 1 min read · -- This thought occurred to me some time ago, why not a short piece about it. If the universe originated with the Big Bang, then the universe is only as big as the distance light could travel in the time since the big bang. This there is a limit to the size of the Universe, it is not infinite. In middle school one of my friends and I talked about the universe and what it would be like at the edge of the universe.
Is it possible for the stock market to crash without causing a recession?
Just because stocks crash does not mean that the economy must go into a recession, right? I mean, most people don’t own a lot of stock and if the market crashes they don’t change their spending. We see market corrections all the time without a resulting recession. What if the market crashes only a little does the economy have to tank too? The market is not the economy and the economy is not the market.

By what measure?
How do you measure success? It is really simple, and you probably get it wrong. The key is happiness. Two measures: Your happiness. Happiness, you bring to others. Both are not instantaneous measures but instead are cumulative. Most of us will die either miserable or oblivious that is just the nature of growing old. What matters is how much of your life were you happy and able to enjoy that happiness. Really it does not matter how happy you were just the percentage of your days that you were happy.
I am a patient sculptor
I have much unfinished work. Trying to beat the clock just leads to shoddy outcomes. 30-year Ports take, you know 30 years. I don't focus on just one project at a time. That leads to things like writers block. I let my mind and attention wander where it may. Give inspiration its due, you can't force it. If I start half a dozen project and a few years later some are just stagnating, I don't sweat it. I may finish them someday or maybe not. They might become inspiration for version 2 or who knows what.
Why is my feed being packed with 4 year old stories
That kid was not born when these stories were written. Why would the jump to the top of my feed. Seriously, it seems the algorithm’s not doing a good job for me. It is not just here on Medium. I get ads push to me that aren’t even close to my interest. Some of the ads are interesting from a voyeuristic point of view but I would never buy the products. Yes, I like to look at pretty models, but I don’t buy women’s clothes. Why does Medium think I want to read 4-year-old stories? TEK
Ukraine has won the war but there will be no peace
Russia will be unable to conquer Ukraine, their aggression has been repulsed and the Russian evil has been exposed. Unlike when Russia invaded in 2014 the world has taken the current invasion seriously. With the failure of Russia to achieve a quick total victory and Ukraine’s in ability to force Russia to capitulate, we are stuck with protracted fighting, no peace. There has not been peace in Ukraine since before 2014. In someways this is a border dispute.
Hu Wat Wen
Hu — the not rich. Thats who. Wat — food and energy. Thats what. Wen -if you only could know. Thats when. When will food and energy become so expensive that everyone not rich will revolt. How long can wages and benefits continue to rise to prevent the revolt. Governments worldwide understand the need for food and energy to be affordable. The rich if they don’t understand at least tolerate the governments subsidizing food and energy.
Why I never got an advanced degree
Here I am 65 years old and I still only have a BS degree. I am still working and am much respected and needed at my job but am often asked about advanced degrees. I was bored at work early in my career and was thinking about Grad School. An opportunity came up and Grad School moved to the back burner. Many, many years later the idea of Grad School came up again, this time maybe an MBA. I was a candidate for a Senior Manager job.

Three of the four countries that have landed on the Moon are BRICS
The Indian space agency just softlanded a spacecraft on the South Pole of the Moon and a brought along a lunar rover. The title "Three of the four countries that have landed on the Moon are BRICS" mostly says it all.
I am sure this was not on the FED's mind.
By Tim Knowles The FED has been doing savers a favor. For less sophisticated investors, savers, higher interest rates are a boon. CD rates are very attractive right now and will stay that way for a while. I know that helping savers is not even on the FED radar. For the first time in a long time savers are actually making inflation adjusted profits. TEK
Ten Glastonbury tips from a 23-year veteran of the festival
From the point of view of a seasoned visitor, Glastonbury Festival is like no other. But for anyone about to embark upon a weekend of music, art and muddy (or sunny) creativity in Worthy Farm for the first time, there are a few need-to-know details before you pack your wellies and embark upon the fun. First off, the hard work is pretty much over. Successfully buying tickets for the festival is not easy, but it should be smooth sailing from there.

The World is not Bankrupt
Not yet. World debt is $300T and world wealth is $360T. The world is $60T to the good. That does not mean all is well. A lot of that wealth is private hands, in the hands of the rich and a lot of that debt is on government books and poor people's credit cards. People in the black are powerful and countries and people that are in the red are weakened. I suggest we don't take these numbers at face value. They don't include a lot of things of value both intrinsic and sentimental.

I am the only one who has this.
Income disparity may be at a historic high, but it feels as though the wealthy are less visible than ever. Consider the one of a kind stuff that you don't even know is one of a kind and maybe extra special. I don't want to spend a lot of money on stuff that everyone with money can buy. I want stuff that nobody even knows about. You can be poor and own a watch that cost you $10,000. That watch might just be an indicator of how stupid and insecure you are. This is from a recent WAPO article.
