Ashley Grier, Ken Lampard and Lee Cordell will be inducted later this year as the third class enshrined in the Washington County Golf Hall of Fame. Grier is PGA Women's Professional of the Year
A Christmas present came a little early for Ashley Grier. The Hagerstown native has been named the 2020 Women’s PGA Professional of the Year, capping an unusual golf season that fluctuated between playing time and club duties at Overbrook Golf Club outside of Philadelphia in Villanova, Pa. Grier finished at the top of the points list with 327.5, outdistancing Jennifer Borocz of North Florida, who had 255.

Schultz misses final round at Senior PGA Pro Championship
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The crash and burn started on the ninth hole of the front nine and carried through to the end for Beaver Creek pro Dirk Schultz on Saturday. In the third round of the 32nd Senior PGA Professional Championship, Schultz fell to the wayside after shooting an 8-over-par 80, leaving him one shot off the cutline at 6-over 221. After a double bogey on No. 9 took him from even par to 2 over, Schultz endured three double bogeys and two bogeys on the way to a 42.

Waynesboro's Devin Smith finishes 3rd at district tourney
YORK, Pa. — Waynesboro senior Devin Smith stepped to the first tee Saturday hoping to begin his march toward being the first-ever Indians golfer to win the PIAA District 3 Class AAA title. After a first-round 72 to share the lead with Spring Grove’s Karl Frisk, Smith had to settle for third place following a 1-over-par 73 at Briarwood East and a 36-hole 145. Frisk finished in a tie at 143 with Carlisle’s John Peters, who won the title in a playoff.
On this date: Leopards stun Hubs on final play
Editor’s note: Today’s “on this date” story is from Oct. 1, 2010. Friday’s battle between North Hagerstown and Smithsburg went down to one final play from scrimmage in overtime. After scoring first to take a 27-21 lead, all North Hagerstown had to do was what it did on the first three plays — keep Smithsburg out of the end zone — to preserve a win.
On this date: Hubs, Leopards’ Huntzberry eke out county titles
Editor’s note: Today’s “on this date” story is from Sept. 29, 2011. North Hagerstown captured its second straight Washington County Public Schools golf crown on Monday at Black Rock Golf Course. On this date: Boonsboro gets by Middletown
Editor's note: Today's "on this date" story is from Sept. 19, 2014. BOONSBORO — If ever there was a one-sided advantage in a long-standing football series, it would be Middletown and its lopsided margin over Boonsboro. On Friday night, the schools met for the 34th time. On only two previous occasions had Boonsboro been a winner. The Warriors can make it three occasions now after a stunning victory over the three-time defending Maryland Class 2A champions.

Chuck Thatcher prevails again at Black Rock
Chuck Thatcher continued as the dominant force at Black Rock Golf Course on Sunday as he won the Michelob Ultra Championship for the sixth time, including five straight. Thatcher, who began the final round two strokes behind leader Chris Gambacurta, shot a 2-under-par 70 to finish at 6-under 138 after his 68 on Saturday. Gambacurta, who shot a 66 in the first round, finished a stroke back after a 73 on Sunday. Ryan Crabtree finished third at 140 after an even-par 72 in the final round.
On this date: Wildcats march 85 yards to victory
Editor’s note: Today’s “on this date” story is from Sept. 12, 2011. WILLIAMSPORT — Waiting until the chips were on the table, Williamsport came up with a straight flush midway through the final quarter. A sputtering ground game suddenly came alive and the Wildcats put together a 13-play, 85-yard drive to clinch a 21-14 victory over Northern Garrett on Monday night. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Jackson had fi ve carries in the sequence that began with 7:42 remaining.
On this date: Crabtree wins Coors Light title
Editor’s note: Today’s “on this date” story is from Sept. 7, 2014. Ryan Crabtree had an opportunity to lock the door on a Coors Light Championship on the final hole, but he forgot to bring the key. The 19-year-old from Williamsport didn’t let his second chance slip away, however, as he used a solid par on the first playoff hole to knock out fellow Williamsport golfer Zach Weber on Sunday at Black Rock Golf Course.
Bushey wins his second city golf title
Chris Bushey did not enter the Hagerstown City Championship field until Friday, and got to the course 10 minutes before Saturday’s 8 a.m. shotgun start. No matter. He won the title in memory of Chris “Lug” Henry, a former club manager at The Greens at Hamilton Run. Bushey shot a torrid 6-under-par 64 for his second championship, his previous win coming in 2017. He claimed the victory by one shot over Billy Reed in the championship flight.
Koelble: Polishing off the last 'Divots'
Today is the day. While you read this "Divots," I am sitting at home on my first official day of retirement. I’ll finish off with a goodbye in just a bit after I send along some offseason notes. No. 1 Montverde rolls to SJIT title
ST. JAMES — There was a house party on Saturday at Saint James School, attended by more than 1,200 fans who took in the 34th playing of the Saint James Invitational Tournament. For the second straight night, crowds packed Alumni Hall, and on Saturday, it was so full that all the kids who love basketball sat on the floor in front of the first row, getting a look at their new heroes.
Montverde, IMG reach SJIT final
PHOTO GALLERY: Montverde Academy vs. National Christian ST. JAMES — Montverde Academy (Fla.) held up its end of the bargain by reaching the final of the 34th Saint James Invitational Tournament with a 102-55 romp over National Christian Academy on Friday. The No. 1 team in the country will suit up Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip against defending national champion IMG Academy (Fla.), which prevailed in a thriller, 64-62, against Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.).
SJIT opens with a pair of thrillers
Before a capacity crowd in Alumni Hall, the opening round of the 34th Saint James Invitational Tournament started with a pair of nailbiters. To start the proceedings, National Christian Academy emerged with a hard-fought 71-66 overtime victory against Legacy Early College (S.C.). The second game had no lack of drama all the way to the end, when Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.) nosed out a 65-63 win over feisty Riverdale Baptist.
Big guns to take aim at SJIT title
The Saint James Invitational Tournament has featured many outstanding players and teams over the years, but the 34th edition just might be the best of all. The national spotlight will be shining over Alumni Hall on the Saint James campus as Montverde Academy, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, looks to extend on its 22-0 record and continue on its path to nationals in April. The Florida powerhouse headlines a superior eight-team field.
Montverde is No. 1 attraction at SJIT
When the No. 1 prep basketball team in the country comes to the neighborhood, the tendency is to take greater notice. That is what local basketball fans will be doing this week when vaunted Montverde Academy comes to town as the prohibitive favorite in the 34th Saint James Invitational Tournament. Under long-time head coach Kevin Boyle, the Florida-based powerhouse has worked its way through a demanding schedule, both on and off the floor, dusting off 22 straight opponents.
South Hagerstown changes things up, downs Spring Mills
Good thoughts came out of South Hagerstown’s 70-37 victory over Spring Mills on Wednesday night. First, South played together as one unit. Second, the Rebels worked up a big lead and kept it until the end. As they close the first half of their season at 4-6, South head coach Chad Brashears and his players will have thoughts about what their record could be, instead of what it is. On three occasions earlier this season, the rebels relinquished substantial leads late in games, resulting in losses.
SJIT field features both No. 1 team in U.S. and last year’s national champ
ST. JAMES — If things continue with the same outcome for the next few weeks, the No. 1 scholastic boys basketball team in the country will invade the Hagerstown area with an unbeaten record. Montverde Academy (Fla.) is perfect through 15 games as it went into action Friday night in the Metro Shores Classic at Toms River, N.J. The Eagles will cap the first day of the 34th Saint James Invitational Tournament against Scotland Campus on Jan.
Brown sets tone early as Miners top Blazers
CLEAR SPRING — If Clear Spring fans did not know who Sean Brown is, they certainly learned fast on Monday night in the Blazers’ gym. Brown, the son of Frostburg State University men’s head coach Sean Brown Sr., put on a show from the opening tip as he led Mountain Ridge to a 61-51 victory over the Blazers.
Williamsport, Ball bounce past Smithsburg
WILLIAMSPORT — Friday was pajama/ugly sweater night for the Williamsport student body. It was a fitting theme for the Smithsburg basketball team, which turned in an ugly scoring night in a 75-33 pasting by the Wildcats. Lincoln Ball had one of his best two-and-a-half quarters in his career to lead the unbeaten Wildcats (5-0, 2-0 CMC Gambrill) with a 30-point performance. He hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor with nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Show of force by the defending BCL champ
Many of the contests in the last five years between St. Maria Goretti and St. Frances Academy have been knee-knockers to the very end. But Friday night’s Baltimore Catholic League opener showed there is a reason St. Frances is currently ranked 22nd in the nation by MaxPreps. The Panthers were in a class of their own from their top player down to the 15th on the roster in a 102-35 win over the Gaels. It was the largest margin of victory in the series between the two teams.

Gators leave Saints in foul mood
ST. JAMES — Saint James' home opener on Friday against Stone Ridge School pretty much mirrored its season opener last Saturday against Bishop O'Connell (Va.). In each game Saint James had key players in first-half foul trouble and in each case the end result was a defeat. On Friday night it was a 73-53 loss to Stone Ridge. Skylar Treadwell and Morgan Moseley, as was the case against Bishop O'Connell, got into foul trouble.
North Hagerstown storms by Smithsburg with defense
The season-opening game between visiting Smithsburg and North Hagerstown brought out one of those common cliches often used when a game becomes a wipeout: It was closer than the final outcome. North Hagerstown’s 68-44 win on Thursday night was anyone’s game in the first 18 minutes of play. Then, a Nor’easter began to blow through Hub Arena and as the game progressed, it took a toll on the Leopards.
Four are chosen for second County Golf Hall class
Four individuals have been selected as the newest Washington County Golf Hall of Fame members. On Monday, Chuck Ingram, Dick Roulette, Greg McNaney and the late Jim Johnson Sr. were selected for the second induction class by a committee vote. They join the nine individuals who were in the first class in February. Two other awards were announced, and they are repeat winners from the first year.
McClain leads Gaels to MAIT 4-peat
In his pre-tournament thoughts, Briggs McClain said, “There is no way we are going to lose the MAIT in my senior year.” True to his insistence of winning, McClain and his St. Maria Goretti teammates defeated St. Andrew's Episcopal, 54-51, on Saturday night in the Gael Center for the Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament title. Goretti (4-0) becames the first team in the 37 MAIT events to win four consecutive championships.
Gaels roll to victory in MAIT opener
While the first game of the 37th edition of the Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament was being played between St. Andrew’s Episcopal and McDonogh School, a room in the back of the Gael Center was filled with stars from host St. Maria Goretti's past — specifically, the teams from 1985-87. Immediately following St. Andrew's 61-37 victory, the players and coaches from those mid-1980s teams were inducted into the school Hall of Fame.
Monroe-era teams inducted into Goretti Hall
The 1980s saw American pop culture come upon us with neon lights, ugly color combinations, a new evolution of clothing and a mad rush to video games. Locally, it marked a period when boys basketball was dominated by St. Maria Goretti. The Gaels had really good teams winning games at an alarming rate. From 1980-83, Goretti went 99-28 — but bigger and better things were about to come. On the way was a group of players including incoming freshman Rodney Monroe.
Host Goretti seeks a four-peat in MAIT
For St. Maria Goretti seniors Briggs McClain and Matt Rogers, nothing would be better at the outset of the basketball season than to complete a career sweep in the Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament. Goretti has won the previous three tournaments, and McClain and Rogers have been part of the last two.
Koelble: Writing the final chapter
The time has come. The decision has been made. The date has been set. It’s third base rounding home. It’s the game-winning touchdown. The 3-pointer at the buzzer. Or even something I’ve never achieved — a hole-in-one. I’ve been doing this sports gig for quite some time, having covered my first event as a teenager in Dover, Ohio, where I grew up. In looking all the way back — and I mean all the way — I guess I was headed to sports directly from birth.
Rebels bash Blake behind Thorpe's four scores
South Hagerstown accomplished something never before done in school football history — winning a playoff game at home. Now, the Rebels have the daunting task of trying to reach another goal never previously achieved — two playoff wins in a season.
Boonsboro’s Jaxson Schultz finishes 12th in 2A-1A state tourney
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In cold, blustery conditions, most golfers in the final round of the MPSSAA state championships found their scores much to their dislike Monday at the University of Maryland Golf Course. Count Boonsboro senior Jaxson Schultz in the majority. With a goal of finishing in the top 10 following his opening-round 81 a week ago, Schultz had to settle for an 80, giving him 161 to finish 12th in the Class 2A-1A tournament.
Cardinals' late TDs fend off Hubs
From North Hagerstown coach Greg Stains' viewpoint, Friday's 35-21 loss to Spring Mills was one of those winnable type of games. It was like a few of the Hubs' other games this season that were part of their 4-5 year. Coming into Friday with a chance to reach the playoffs, what hounded North most of the season reared itself again. North had a hard time putting a runner down with first and second hits.
Boonsboro's Schultz makes cut at state golf tourney
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It was a scary day for Boonsboro senior Jaxson Schultz all the way to the very last stroke of the golf ball. Four good strokes from tee to green were needed Tuesday, and Schultz came through with a par 4 on the 17th to finish with an 81, smack on the cutline to reach the finals of the Maryland Class 2A-1A state tournament Thursday at the University of Maryland. With the expected cutline to hit 80, maybe 81, Schultz needed a par.
Divots: Grier celebrates USA's Women's PGA Cup victory
Ashley Grier’s trip to Austin, Texas was one she can put in the “never forget” category. The Hagerstown native, now an assistant professional at Overbrook Golf Club outside of Philadelphia, was one of five women selected to play for the United States in the first-ever Women’s PGA Cup. It might have seemed like an extended gala event.
Cook, Melendez power Hubs past Eagles
Antoine Cook had one of his better games of the season on Friday night as one of the key players North Hagerstown used to derail Hedgesville 41-19 at Mike Callas Stadium. The junior lugged the pigskin 20 times for 138 yards, caught four passes for 58 yards and scored three touchdowns, two on the ground. North quarterback Jay-Naz Melendez threw three TD passes — one each to Cook, Kalieb McElroy and Hunter Keller — to earn a prominent place in the North football record-book.
Hubs get rolling in second half, top Rebels
Mike Callas Stadium was rocking in the second half of Wednesday’s Class 3A West Region I girls soccer quarterfinal match between rivals North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown. Getting revenge for a regular-season loss to the Rebels, the Hubs went on a four-goal binge in the second half to secure a 5-1 victory and a berth in the semifinals Saturday. North will travel to top-seed Linganore for a 5 p.m. start. On Sept. 26, North lost to South 3-1.
Divots: Birth defect fails to slow Dehoff
Morgan Dehoff follows in the footsteps of his father and older brother on the golf course. For Morgan, however, there is one key difference in how he goes out and plays. The 15-year-old was born with a birth defect and hereditary disorder, nail-patella syndrome, in his left leg. Morgan was left with a left leg discrepancy, an angular deformity at his hip, knee and ankle, and partially formed kneecap and ligaments. “I understood I had a disability,” said Morgan.
National champion IMG Academy leads spectacular TSJIT field
ST. JAMES — There will be no shortage of talent at the 34th and newly-named Tarkett Saint James Invitational Tournament when it takes center stage from Jan. 30 through Feb. 1, 2020. The TSJIT will be buzzing as 2019 national champion IMG Academy, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., headlines the eight-team field announced by Saints head coach and assistant athletic director Kevin Breslin.
Schultz, Boonsboro get top billing in county golf
Getting contributions from everyone in its lineup, the Boonsboro golf team enjoyed a walk around Black Rock Golf Course and won its third straight Washington County Public Schools Championship team title on Tuesday. Senior Jaxson Schultz shot an even-par 36 on the back nine to finish a 4-over 76 round for medalist honors —but more importantly spearheading the Warriors’ 329 team score for the three-peat.
Divots: Still some titles to decide as end of season nears
Using the baseball phrase, the golf season is “rounding third and headin’ home.” Just a handful of events remain on the 2019 calendar, at least on the official side of things. Here’s a look at the slate: • Monday: The Middle Atlantic PGA Northern Chapter Pro Pro-Pro Assistant at Elkridge Club in Baltimore. It’s a two-man team event and locals pairing up include Dirk Schultz & Bill Hoffman and Dave Grier & Chris Oleson. • Oct.
Schultz finishes 5th in Maryland Senior Open
BALTIMORE — Beaver Creek pro Dirk Schultz could not match his first round in the Maryland Senior Open Championship on Tuesday and finished in fifth place at Elkridge Golf Club. Following a 1-under-par 69 on Tuesday, Schultz went 1-over 71 on a cool, breezy day to finish at even-par 140. Schultz was attempting to win his second straight Open title and third overall. Schultz had a good saves for par on the first two holes but then had a double-bogey 6 on the third.
Schultz decompresses to earn state golf berth
For the second straight year, Boonsboro’s Jaxson Schultz will be the lone Washington County golfer competing in Class 2A-1A at the Maryland State Golf Championship on Oct. 29-30 at College Park. In Tuesday’s District 1 2A-1A tournament at Black Rock, The Boonsboro senior worked hard to score a 5-over-par 76 and gain a spot as an individual in the state tournament. He also earned a sixth-place finish among individual scores. There were positives by the Warriors as a team.
Divots: Austin is the place to be
He’s Texas-bound. The Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin is a major player in golf tournaments now through to April of 2020, and Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz will be on the grounds twice. Omni Barton has four events on its docket. On Sunday, the 29th annual PGA Cup concludes. Next up is the Senior PGA Professional Championship Oct. 3-6 and that’s where Schultz comes in.
Addison's TDs add up in Titans' win over Hubs
FREDERICK, Md. — A week ago, Tuscarora beat South Hagerstown in the last minute behind senior Jordan Addison. On Friday night on its home turf, Tuscarora had no late theatrics to worry about. The Titans steamrolled North Hagerstown 63-27, rolling up over 500 yards of offense behind Addison, sophomore quarterback Brian Jester and junior back Naseem Pacheco.
