Always Think Feet First “Oh, everyone doesn’t need orthotics.” This was the response I got from a top chiropractic researcher after reading an article authored by me and Dr. Terry Yochum in 2011, “100% of My Patients Get Orthotics. What About Yours?” In 2011, this article was the by-product of Dr. Yochum, a leading chiropractic radiologist, and me lecturing together many times, and him hearing my reasoning, case studies and experience with orthotics and patients.

The importance of X-rays before and after hip replacement
X-rays reveal much information as to why a patient has hip pain. Hip problems can also produce groin pain. The two most common causative findings on X-ray are unlevel femoral head heights (fhh) and/or one or both hips degenerated. Maggs Law℠ of tissue tolerance states: When the loading of a tissue exceeds the capacity of that tissue, compensatory physiological changes occur. With the hip, unilateral or bilateral excessive loading almost always leads to premature degeneration.
Chiropractic diagnostic tests and new-tech guidelines for the profession
Let’s create new chiropractic diagnostic tests and therapeutic protocols best for patients When we hear the word technology, we think of our smartphones, iPads and Bluetooth devices. As chiropractors, we should be thinking digital laser foot scan, digital X-ray, MRI, cold laser therapy and spinal decompression. These are the technologies and new chiropractic diagnostic tests that will help any chiropractor become a better diagnostician and healer.

How many times have you heard about athletes whose careers ended prematurely because of “bad knees”? I recall one of the most promising hockey players of all time, Bobby Orr — widely acknowledged as one of the greatest of all time — who was sadly forced to retire from the sport at the age of 30 because of knee injuries. Have you ever heard the expression “being cut off at the knees”? It is an acknowledgment that knee injury is a condition that can have a significant impact on quality of life.
Simple Tricks for Increasing Fiber Intake
When it comes to weight management, there are many elements that go into a comprehensive plan for a health-promoting diet. You want to eat foods that are nutrient-dense and low in calories. You also want to make sure that your macros are balanced. Another critical element of any weight loss plan is the amount of fiber you get in your diet. If you’re worried that you’re not getting enough fiber, don’t fret.

Point-Counterpoint: does the chiropractic message need to change?
Chiropractic Economics’ Point-Counterpoint is where doctors of chiropractic and health care industry professionals debate the industry’s hottest topics. This issue: does the chiropractic message need to change?
Opinion: standardized approach needed for chiropractic adjustment benefits
‘Crooked Man,’ standardized exams could clarify public perception of chiropractic adjustment benefits The longer one practices the art and science of chiropractic, it seems the more confusing the public’s perception of the word chiropractic and chiropractic adjustment benefits becomes.
How to present the ultimate chiropractic report of findings
With the ultimate chiropractic report of findings, orthotics, laser and other treatments follow only after thorough patient education The chiropractic report of findings is the cumulative byproduct of many aspects of a chiropractor’s belief system, confidence, knowledge and compassion for the patient. It’s a culmination of everything, and the patient will know immediately if this is an office they feel good about or not.
Running pain: Looking at the feet for common injuries
A 2015 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that runners who avoided injury were those who landed lightest on their feet, sustaining the lowest levels of impact loading.1 The researchers suggested that runners consciously think about landing more softly and that they adjust their stride so that they land closer to the midfoot. That can be easier said than done. Most runners are heel-strikers.
Improve patient outcomes with diagnostic scanning
No matter how long they have been seeing their doctor, their condition has not improved. I always ask, “Did they do a digital foot scan? Did they take standing X-rays? Did they do an MRI?” In almost every case, the answer is no. We have come a long way from the early days of chiropractic care, specifically in diagnostic tools. We have access to advanced technologies such as digital foot scans, X-rays, and MRIs that allow us to see inside a patient’s body.
An ongoing treatment protocol for serial distortion
The feet are the foundation of the body. Just like a house, when the foundation is not level everything that sits atop is not supported and is crooked. This means that normal foot mechanics can adversely influence the normal functions of the ankle, knee, hip, back, and neck. If left untreated, many foot conditions eventually contribute to health concerns up the kinetic chain.
Cold laser therapy with a pending spondylolisthesis
In September, 2017, after serving for four years as the director of sports injuries and sports biomechanics at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, New York, I received approval that would allow me to treat students in the school during the school day once a week. Before treatment each student had to first go through a complete biomechanical exam in my office, then go through a report of findings with their parents to decide if they wanted to go through weekly treatments at the school.
[Case study] Heredity and how it contributes to back problems
Mary Anderson entered my office in July of this year with hip pain. “Not too bad,” she said, “but I don’t want it to get worse.” Mary had never been to a chiropractor before, but she’d finally decided she needed more than someone to just tell her nothing was wrong and it should heal on its own.
The structural management program: A case study of a young athlete
A recent Newsweek article on low back pain discussed the latest update from Harvard Medical School.1 The article focused on alternative therapies and chiropractic was obviously a part of that discussion. The article began with the admission that low back pain often mystifies not only the patient, but the doctor as well, as a specific diagnosis is rarely determined.
Achieving an efficient cash and insurance practice
As costs continue to escalate beyond affordability, many chiropractors sit motionless in their offices like those on the Titanic, hoping everything will be OK. But your future success in the chiropractic market will be guided by the decisions you make today regarding the economic model of your practice. Unfortunately, for many chiropractors, this decision will be based on fear rather than strategy.
Redefining sports chiropractic: The DCs role
With the popularity of sports in this country today, more chiropractors are staking their claim as sports injury experts. Even if only for marketing purposes, these “specialists” are growing in numbers. For those who actually participate with teams or are attempting to become part of a team’s medical staff, job description at some point becomes a key issue.
Building the foundation for a sports chiropractic practice - Chiropractic Economics
Sports medicine, unlike other specialties today, is in its fetal stages of development. Pre-season exams performed on athletes are medical exams, despite the fact that most sports injuries are structurally based injuries. No one ever looks at the athlete from a structural point of view. Top college and pro athletes have strength coaches, who work on strength and conditioning, but no one ever evaluates an athlete structurally, before, during or after an injury.
Why health concerns start farther up the kinetic chain
The feet are the foundation of the body. While 99 percent of all feet are normal at birth, 8 percent develop troubles by age 1, 41 percent at age 5, and 80 percent by age 201. By age 40, nearly everyone has a foot condition of some sort. Many conditions start in the feet, but eventually contribute to health concerns farther up the kinetic chain, such as in the spine. Custom orthotics can help preserve the body’s optimal foot-spine connection.
