How White Rule Ended in Missions
After the horrors of the Second World War, global attitudes on race began to change as secular and religious leaders called for both civil rights and an end to white rule. While historians usually recount the civil rights movement in the United States with little reference to events in the wider world, religious and secular leaders of the period understood American civil rights as part of part of a larger campaign against global racism.
What Liz Cheney Can Teach American Evangelicals
This piece was adapted from Russell Moore’s newsletter. Subscribe here. Some people in her own party want Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to lose her membership on committees and even her place within her party’s conference in the United States House of Representatives, all because she won’t “move on” from her beliefs that the attempts to overturn the last election—leading up to last January’s attack on the Capitol—are a clear and present danger to democracy.
The Capitol Attack Signaled a Post-Christian Church, Not Merely a Post-Christian Culture
A year has passed since the January 6 insurrectionist attack on the United States Capitol, and two images still haunt my mind. One is that of a makeshift gallows constructed to threaten the murder of the vice president of the United States. And the other is that of a sign, held above that angry crowd, that read, “Jesus Saves.” That these two images can coexist in the same mob is a sign of crisis for American evangelicalism.
How to Disagree Nicely but Not Lose Your Convicti...
A few days after Bill Clinton was elected, I (Rick) was facilitating a small-group leaders’ meeting. One of the leaders whose political convictions leaned strongly Republican suggested that our small groups should have a time of lament in light of the recent election. Some others nodded in agreement. Was this a good idea? I thought not. I mentioned to the leaders that about 80 percent of evangelicals voted Republican, a fact that most seemed to be aware of.
In 2022, Let’s Take T.S. Eliot’s Advice
This is a season for taking stock of who we are, how we live, and what we are building. It is the best season, perhaps, to ask ourselves the question of poet T. S. Eliot’s choruses from The Rock: “Have you built well?” In 1934, Eliot penned The Rock to fundraise for 45 church buildings near London. Appropriately, his frequent theme was building—not only churches but also the church as a thick community, an institution, a people seeking knowledge of God, a sanctuary from alienation and futility.
Communing with Christ at his Christmas Feast
On a snowy day in downtown Chicago, as the first day of Advent drew near, I sat with my upper-class systematic theology students to discuss the meaning of the sacraments. I opened my lecture with a simple question: “If forbidden fruit brought sin, can bread and wine bring redemption?” At first, some of my students sat and scratched their heads.
Original

A Light to the Nations
Epiphany: On this day, we celebrate the visit of the Magi and their worship of Jesus. We reflect on the revelation of Jesus’ identity and purpose to the peoples of the world. Read Matthew 2:1–12. Who is the Good News for? When we get deals and offers in the mail, they sometimes call their sale or promotion a “friends and family” special. Some things are too good to keep to yourself, but they’re also too radical to open up to everyone.
A Pregnant Promise
Advent Week 4: Incarnation and Nativity This week, we step into the events of the Nativity and consider the miracle of the eternal Word entering the world as a human child. We learn lessons of faith from the people whom God chose to play a part in these events. And we celebrate the good news of great joy for all people! Read Luke 1:39–56. Mary’s first recorded activity during her pregnancy was to visit her cousin Elizabeth.
