Africa and the US ‘non-proposal’ on changes to the UN Security Council
The reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC) emerged as one of the most contentious and polarising issues under negotiation in the lead-up to the Summit of the Future, held in New York from 20 to 23 September. The intergovernmental negotiations framework, which compiled the outcome document, effusively billed as the UN “Pact of the Future”, essentially kicked the can down the road as far as undertaking any concrete decisions on UNSC reform is concerned.
Africa and the US ‘non-proposal’ on UN Security Council reform
Professor Tim Murithi is Research Associate with the Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa at the University of Cape Town. The US proposal that Africa gets two seats on the UN Security Council without veto powers would relegate the continent’s 1.4 billion people to permanent second-class citizens on a Security Council that allocates 60% of its agenda to issues relating to Africa.
International Court of Justice survives the judicial stress test
The United Nations’ International Court of Justice (ICJ) passed the judicial stress test when it issued a ruling on South Africa’s application for provisional measures against Israel’s military action in Gaza on 26 January, against intense geopolitical pressure from Western countries.
Africa: Requiem for the UN Security Council - Towards a UN Charter Review Conference
Cape Town, South Africa — The world's institutions are ill-prepared and poorly designed to effectively address global challenges such as major power conflicts, pandemics, the climate catastrophe, refugee crises, violent extremism, illicit profiteering from natural resources, and the regulation of artificial intelligence systems. In particular, the United Nations, which was created to address the problems of the world in 1945, is no longer fit for purpose.
Africa: Will the U.S.-Africa Summit Address U.N. Security Council Reform?
African leaders have long sought Security Council reform. With new momentum and U.S. support, it could finally come to fruition. U.N. Security Council (UNSC) reform has been a long-standing demand from many in the international community, but calls for an overhaul of the institution have grown louder amid renewed interest in democratizing the international system and addressing historical exclusion and injustices in its core institutions.
Time to do away with ‘dysfunctional’ United Nations Security Council
The conscription of an additional 300 000 troops in Russia is a sign that President Vladimir Putin is hunkering down for the long haul in the Ukraine war, which was launched by a Russian invasion on 24February this year.
OPINIONISTA: Afghanistan: Building peace and nationhood after centuries of military adventurism in the graveyard of empires
The Afghanistan crisis suggests that the global narrative needs to change insofar as how the international system enables countries to emerge out of conflict and build inclusive societies. Neither peacebuilding nor nation-building occurs through the barrel of a gun pointed at the so-called recipients. The devastating images of Afghanis clinging to a US Air Force plane as it lifted off from the airport in Kabul were soul-wrenching.
OPINIONISTA: If there is one big thing Covid-19 has taught us, it is that we need to deepen and strengthen pan-Africanism
Africa needs to embrace pan-Africanism to address the damaging effects of Covid-19 on governance, socioeconomic wellbeing, gender equality, public health, education and industry. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 already provides a blueprint for the continent to pursue a post-coronavirus future. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 refers to pursuing “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena”.
OPINIONISTA: American tribalism is alive and well – an urgent national conversation is needed
Unless American society addresses the foundational trauma that is concretised deep within the edifice of the construction of the nation-state, and the violence, suppression and subjugation of Native Americans and the enslavement of African-Americans transported against their will, then the attacks on not only Asian-Americans but other American ‘tribes’ will continue.
BUSINESS MAVERICK OP-ED: African Continental Free Trade Area should be used as a driver of peace and security on the continent
Illustrative image | (Source: Unsplash / Cytonn Photography) Insecurity and political tension continue to undermine Africa by disrupting peacebuilding, development and governance efforts. A key driver of insecurity has been the effects of the arbitrary borders bequeathed to the African continent by the ravages of predatory colonialism. Traditional interstate wars have been increasingly replaced by intrastate conflicts.
OP-ED: Space oddity: Is humanity ready for extraterrestrials? It’s time to prepare
(Photo: Unsplash / Greg Rakozy) The likelihood that there are other, more advanced, extraterrestrial civilisations out there is more than a probability, and in fact it is irrational and arrogant to believe that humanity is alone in the universe. Humanity has entered an interstellar age, but the question is whether we are ready, as a people, to engage with extraterrestrial civilisations. Traditionally, this line of inquiry has been theoretical.

Real ETs? This video grab image obtained courtesy of the US department of defence shows part of an unclassified video taken by navy pilots that has circulated for years showing interactions with UAPs (formerly UFOs). The department said it was releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage is real.
Battle for the truth about UFOs
US navy confirms UFOs recorded by pilots are real. COMMENT The United States Navy formally authorised the release of a statement, posted on its website last week, confirming that three unclassified videos depicting high-velocity unidentified flying objects (UFOs), now rebranded as unidentified aerial phenomena or UAPs, were not fake. One video was captured by trained Navy pilots in November 2004, and the other two in January 2015.
Global virus proves we are one
The devastating and wide-ranging effects of Covid-19 have caused the disruption of human society on a global scale. The disease does not discriminate against its victims on the basis of nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, culture, religion or affluence and it has fuelled global pandemonium.
US navy confirms UFOs recorded by pilots are real
Now that the navy has confirmed that these UFOs recorded by its pilots are “real”, it suggests that the countries of the world collectively need to begin to articulate how they plan to engage with them. The spokesperson for the United States navy’s deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, Joseph Gradisher, has confirmed to Time magazine that the videos recorded by its pilots showing a series of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and released to the public are, in fact, real.

Visitors from outer space - or military aircraft made on Earth ?
COMMENT The United States Navy will develop guidelines for pilots to report unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) — previously called unidentified flying objects (UFOs) — which enter into military-controlled air space, according to revelations from media company Politico, and The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan listens to a translation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel?s speech at the American Jewish Committee’s 100th anniversary gala at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, USA, 04 May 2006 (reissued 18 August 2018). Africa Must Assert Itself in the Remaking of the World Order
analysis By Tim Murithi & Ashanti KuneneThe chaos that is now engulfing the world has a very Western origin. It would therefore be self-defeating for the rest of humanity to permit the self-same authors of chaos to frame the contours of a new global order. It is now time for the rest of the world to assert its right to remake the next international order.

ICC 'no longer useful' if only prosecuting Africans
At the close of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC), the party issued a statement in which it argued that “the International Criminal Court [ICC] is no longer useful for the purposes for which it was intended”. This statement finally lays to rest any uncertainty as to where the current South African government stands in relation to the ICC.
