What was your first job as a journalist?
My editor showed me a personal computer and asked me to review it by the end of the day. I had never used a computer before.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Oh yes. We all used to work on typewriters. When the power goes off, those of us who suffered will be essential to society.
How is social media changing news?
It gives journalists a responsibility. Now there is too much content for anyone to absorb. How do I make my work essential, and stand out?
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's a privilege and a responsibility -- to be able to talk to talented, smart people, but to bring them to a wider audience.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
With some understanding of what I do -- but by any method.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was cartoonist for my University paper. Please don't look the work up, you might find it.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
All the work we do to explain the impact of economics on ordinary people -- particularly in the Global South, for VoxTalks and VoxDev Talks.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Before the event!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
"Would you like to interview our CEO? It's pretty amazing: he's still in business."
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Business, innovation and economics are not, in my experience, about "great men". They are about great ideas and great teams.
