UK Trade Delegations to China: 2013 to now…
The UK trade mission to China, 2013. Back in December 2013, a few weeks in to my time at the V&A and off the back of our seminal China Design Now (2008) and Masterpieces of Chinese Painting, 700-1900 (2013) exhibitions – an ambitious survey of one of the world’s great artistic traditions curated by Hongxing Zhang – I was invited, with 48 hours’ notice, to join David Cameron’s trade delegation to The People’s Republic of China.
Secrets of the Museum
Those with a thirst for knowledge might like to look at the Course Brochure for our V&A Academy, which offers Adult Learning programmes on a wide range of topics. These range from year-long courses on subjects such as Fashion and Dress History, Medieval Art, and the Arts of East Asia, to short courses including our popular ‘V&A Uncovered: Collections and Curators’ course, and weekend courses on everything from Jewellery to Cars.
£75m economic impact of V&A Dundee revealed
We’re pleased to share independent research showing the museum had a £75 million economic impact across Scotland in our first year. The study found that visitors in the first 12 months were worth £21 million to the Dundee economy and £75 million to the Scottish economy. This exceeds the earlier predictions of £10 million in Dundee and £23 million across Scotland.
Gus Casely-Hayford is inaugural director of V&A East
Currently director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., Gus will join us in spring 2020 to lead the creative strategy and programming across V&A East’s two new public venues – a five-storey museum on Stratford Waterfront and a dynamic collections and research centre at Here East – both now under construction in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Both sites will open in 2023 as part of East Bank, a new powerhouse of culture, education, innovation and growth.
Risk and resilience
From the December 2020 print edition While COVID-19 has plunged us into a new reality, with new stresses and risks within supply chains, it has also highlighted how sustainable procurement offers solutions that can save money, deliver environmental benefits and encourage spending public dollars for the public good. It can be hard to think about opportunity in the midst of so much uncertainty.
How Shenzhen's the Victoria and Albert museum signals a new design for the city
The first thing anyone tells you about Shenzhen, the city in southern China that borders Hong Kong and has a population of at least 12 million, is that it was once a sleepy fishing village. As with its neighbor, which began British colonial life as an unpromising rocky outcrop in the South China Sea ("Albert is so much amused at my having got the island of Hong Kong," wrote Queen Victoria in 1841, of her imperial bauble), the tale of an unpromising beginning emphasizes the vast distance traveled.
Tim Reeve, deputy director of the V&A, remembers Martin Roth
I felt I knew Martin long before I arrived for interview at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in spring 2013, when I got wind of the infamous headline shortly after his arrival in the UK—“Welcome to scruffy Britain: German director of the V&A lambasts the dressed-down style which has outlawed the tie”. As a committed tie-wearer, I liked him immediately.
Looking Back: An Early Trial of Marine Scrubbers
Back in 2009, the 2015 Emission Control Areas established in IMO Annex VI seemed a long way off to many in the marine and emission control industry. Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a DuPont company, anticipated the marine industry’s imminent need for reliable emission control solutions to meet the upcoming regulations. BELCO re-engineered its proven, land-based refinery wet scrubber technology for marine service.
