Hoyas lose at St. Johns, let another chance for a signature win slip away
Georgetown men’s basketball (12-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) lost to the St. John’s Red Storm (15-3, 6-1 BIG EAST) 63-58 on Jan. 14 at Madison Square Garden. In one of the Hoyas’ last chances to pick up a marquee win, they once again could not hang on to a double-digit lead, turning the ball over 19 times as a team. In a game that both teams needed to perform well in, each side gave their best punch. For Georgetown, it represented a chance to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive and avoid a three-game skid.

Steady Eddy: Hoyas drop 94 on Le Moyne in first game of Cooley era
“It’s been so long since last we met” is quoted all too often around Georgetown. In fact, it’s usually not been long at all. But on Tuesday night, in Capital One Arena, it truly had been so, so long since last we met, at least in such numbers. The student section was full, and overall attendance clocked in at 9,335, neither of which has happened in a non-conference game since Syracuse came to D.C. in 2021. Attendance has not been so high for a home opener since 2011.
Cooley preaches patience as he looks to resurrect the Hoyas
On March 20, 2023, Georgetown announced Ed Cooley as their next men’s basketball head coach, ending his 12-year tenure as head coach of the Providence Friars. The announcement came weeks after Georgetown and former head coach Patrick Ewing parted ways after six years. When he arrived on the Hilltop, Cooley was ready to hit the ground running. When asked in an interview with the Voice how long it took for his new situation to feel real, Cooley said, “March 22, 2023.
An early evaluation of the Ed Cooley Era
Former Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio, in one of my favorite quotes of all time, doubled down on the eternal and fierce rivalry between my beloved Spartans and their interstate competitors, the Michigan Wolverines. Today, however, I frame his words of wisdom not in the context of a football game, but on the state of Georgetown’s men’s basketball program post-Ed Cooley hiring.
Cool times ahead: Georgetown announces Ed Cooley as next head coach
Georgetown has landed its coach. In what may be seen as a controversial move, Jack DeGioia and company have hired Ed Cooley from its fellow “Catholic 7” and BIG EAST conference-mate, the Providence Friars. In a race that, per reports from Casual Hoya and other Georgetown basketball blogs, came down largely to Cooley and Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Hoyas have hit on their apparent top choice for next coach of men’s basketball.
Men’s Basketball closes out regular season with blowout loss to Creighton
The Georgetown Hoyas (7-24, 2-18 BIG EAST) suffered a blowout loss to the Creighton Bluejays (19-11, 13-6 BIG EAST), 99-59, on the road in Omaha to close out their regular season. Expectations were low for the Hoyas heading into the game as they had already locked in their eleventh seed in the Big East Tournament. They still had a chance to stop Creighton from moving up in the rankings, though. However, any hopes of winning were immediately dashed when the Bluejays opened up the game on a 19-0 run.
In game of runs, Georgetown comes through late against Butler
For just the second time this season, the Georgetown men’s basketball team (7-21, 2-15 BIG EAST) has won a game in conference. They came through late to win 68-62 on the road against a Butler team (13-15, 5-12 BIG EAST) that waxed the Hoyas 80-51 on Georgetown’s home floor earlier this season. The story of the game: the return of Qudus Wahab. Once again, the center position would take center stage in this matchup.
Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve: Men’s Basketball loses close match-up to UConn
The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (6-18, 1-12 BIG EAST) fell to the UConn Huskies (18-6, 7-6 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. While the matchup was competitive throughout, the Hoyas struggled on both ends of the floor late, giving UConn a 68-62 win. The narrow loss extends the Hoyas’ BIG EAST losing streak to three games. Despite the team’s recent struggles, Capital One Arena was bustling as tipoff approached.
This Week in Basketball (1/23-1/29): Men make history, women’s squad on the rise
MBB v Depaul (Jan. 24) The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (6-15, 1-9 BIG EAST) once again made history – this time in a positive way! On January 24, they snapped their 29-game BIG EAST losing streak with a 81-76 win over DePaul thanks to sophomore guard Primo Spears’ 21 points, allowing fans to celebrate the end of an era and Jack the Bulldog’s birthday on the same night. A more detailed breakdown of the game – and its implications for the season going forward – is available here.

Last Week in Basketball: 11/20/22
Last week, the Georgetown University basketball teams played four games, opening up non-conference play with a 3-1 combined record. Women’s Basketball v Salem, November 7: The women’s team started off their season strong, beating Salem (1-4) 77-46. The Hoyas came out with a bang, scoring 39 points in the first half while only allowing Salem to put up 15. Salem shot the ball better in the second half, but were still outmatched, and Georgetown pulled out the win with ease.
Men's Soccer Sinks Navy, Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament
Sports Rafael Suanes/Georgetown University The Georgetown Hoyas men’s soccer team (12-5-3) opened their NCAA tournament run on a cloudless Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Navy Midshipmen (7-5-9) at Shaw Field. The Hoyas played a dominant game, defeating the Midshipmen 2-0 to advance to the second round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament. The Hoyas opened the game well, controlling possession from kickoff and consistently pressuring the Midshipmen defense.
The skeletons in the closet at the 2022 Qatar World Cup
Halftime Sports Design by Graham Krewinghaus A colossus looms on the horizon: the skeleton of a soccer stadium in Qatar ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In the midst of construction, thousands of underpaid migrant workers toil in the scorching heat. Many desperately want to help their families back home but have no idea if or when their next paycheck will arrive. I detailed the labor conditions faced by migrant workers in Qatar for my Georgetown SFS application essay two years ago. Now, as of Nov.
Faith on the field: How student athletes navigate religion at Georgetown
Sports By Tim Tan and Ella Bruno For many of Georgetown’s almost 800 student athletes, athletics are practically a full-time job. While juggling a 40-hour sports schedule, academics, and social life, spiritual well-being can get put on the back burner. For some student athletes, religious traditions and sports complement one another, allowing for a more holistic athletic experience, further spiritual growth, and a deepened sense of community.

The Voice guide to the MLS playoffs
All statistics in this article come from the official website of Major League Soccer. The autumn wind whips around corners, sending bronzed leaves in a dizzying spiral toward the earth. Scattered pumpkins line the pathways toward Georgetown dormitories, in which Hoyas gather conspiring about the perfect Halloween costume, frantically studying for endless midterms, or, like me, eyeing the 2022 finalized Major League Soccer (MLS) table.

Unicorn Town: Alumni’s new documentary showcases American football abroad
Sports Photo Courtesy of Gravitas Ventures When most students think about what “going pro” looks like for college football players, the first thing that comes to mind is the NFL. On ESPN documentaries and featurettes during NFL commercial breaks, we see the classic progression—a smiling elementary schooler in an oversized helmet grows into a more serious high school athlete, and then a college standout.
Let’s Talk About Fight Club: GU Club Boxing hosts first showcase since 2019
Stepping into the boxing ring on April 23, Camilla Sigmund (COL ’23) had four goals on her mind: avoid a concussion, keep her footwork strong, breathe slowly, and prevent her opponent from catching a rest during the fight’s three rounds. It worked. Sigmund’s fight against Towson’s Taylor Chaney was a masterclass. Chaney stalked forward, flailing with clumsy thrusts. But her outstretched arms left her exposed—and Sigmund punished the poor habit brutally.
What goes up must come down: men’s basketball struggles after last year’s triumph
Sports By Tim Tan and Lucie Peyrebrune 12:00 PM There’s no sugarcoating it: We’re doing badly. Really badly. In fact, the Hoyas’ 0-8 Big East record is their worst start to conference play since joining the Big East as a founding member in 1979. While the team shows potential to improve down the stretch, they must answer some serious questions heading into next season. After Georgetown’s triumph in the 2021 Big East Tournament, Hoya fans had high expectations entering the season.
Georgetown comes out on top: Hoyas juice 'Cuse, 79-75
Sports Colln Holloway John Picker The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (5-4, Big East), defeated the Syracuse Orange (5-5, ACC) at Capital One Arena on Saturday. The Hoyas saw strong performances from freshman guard Aminu Mohammed and senior guard Donald Carey. Mohammed particularly stood out, notching a double-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists on the day.
Heartbreak Hoyas: Georgetown fails on the football field
Last season, the only sounds coming out of Cooper Field were those of construction. There were no fans, no Pep Band, and no players. COVID-19 shuttered the Georgetown football program. When fans returned to the Hilltop, they found a newly-renovated stadium in the place of the formerly dilapidated field. Regrettably, a new field did not lead to new fortunes. For the ninth consecutive season, the Hoyas finished with a record under .500, leaving fans to wonder what’s next for the squad.

Women’s basketball looks for a fresh start this season
After a tough season, the Georgetown women’s basketball team is ready to write the next chapter in their story. For both the returners from last season and newcomers, the 2021-22 season will be about realizing the team’s potential and bouncing back from the challenges of the pandemic. The Hoyas hope to improve from last season and win key games to progress in the Big East standings. In the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, the Hoyas faced an overwhelming number of obstacles.
Hoyas take down Villanova on Senior Day
Sports On a cloudless Saturday afternoon in the nation’s capital, the No. 1 Georgetown Hoyas men’s soccer team (11-1-0, 5-1) regained their momentum and took a big step towards a third-straight Big East regular season title with a 3-1 victory over the Villanova Wildcats (8-5-0, 4-3-0). The win was an important statement as the Hoyas strove to rebound from a road upset to the Providence Friars (Big East, 8-2-3, 4-1-2) on Wednesday.
"I am DC": Jamorko's Journey
Jamorko Pickett (COL ’21) graduates from Georgetown University today as a fine arts major and Big East champion. “If you would have said that sentence to people five years ago, we can count on one hand how many people would have believed you, and it wouldn’t have taken up the whole hand,” said Emmanuel Kakulu, Pickett’s head coach at Eastern High School. Indeed, Pickett’s journey was an improbable one.
