Frontiers | Reassessing the role of basal cortisol in ACTH stimulation testing for canine hypoadrenocorticism: insights from a large UK referral and first-opinion dataset
1 Introduction Canine hypoadrenocorticism (HA) is characterized by glucocorticoid (and usually mineralocorticoid) insufficiency (1). Dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism typically present with vague and variable clinical signs, most commonly including lethargy, gastrointestinal disturbances (vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and, less commonly, hematemesis and melena), weight loss, and occasionally collapse.
The Value of Neutrophil Cell Population Data Parameters as Markers of Systemic Inflammation in Dogs and Cats
1 Introduction In humans, markers of systemic inflammation include leukogram changes such as alterations in neutrophil number and morphology, positive acute phase proteins (APPs) such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA), and cytokines such as Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) [1].
Barnett Waddingham - University pension disclosures: costs and funding trends
The results of our 14th survey on UK universities' pension liability assumptions for accounting purposes is here. This blog summarises the key insights provided in the full survey. Pension deficits have slightly reduced over the year to 31 July 2024, mainly due to modest asset value growth, though lower discount rates from falling yields offset these gains. Recent yield increases might impact future results.
Association of Serum Symmetric Dimethylarginine Concentrations and Inflammation in Cats
1 Introduction Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a by-product of intranuclear arginine methylation in all nucleated cells, specifically by Type II protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) enzymes [1], and is released during proteolysis. It is primarily excreted by renal filtration [2] and serum SDMA concentrations are less influenced by changes in muscle mass than are serum creatinine concentrations [3].

Prevalence of neoplasia and concurrent diseases in dogs and cats with hypercobalaminemia: A retrospective case-control study
Abstract Background Hypercobalaminemia is infrequently reported in companion animals and is considered of low clinical significance. Recent studies have described its association with inflammatory, immune-mediated, endocrine, and neoplastic conditions in dogs and cats. Objectives We aimed to investigate the association between hypercobalaminemia and neoplasia in companion animals and to identify other concurrent diseases or clinicopathologic changes.
