If you’re put off by the length, you’re probably not the right person to listen to it
Listening to the music of acclaimed Canadian composer and performer Sarah Davachi live is an experience riven with contradictions. You enter an aural space which offers its own solution to the problem of dualism by being simultaneously utterly cerebral and intensely visceral, intimate yet transcendent. Her drone music is austere, glacial, yet there is a baroque ornamentation which emerges from microtonal frictions.
(UK) In What Circumstances Can Directors be Personally Liable for Company Taxes?
A lot is said about directors’ duties – ensuring that they are complied with to avoid potential claims resulting in personal liability – and that remains the case. However, as officers of a limited liability company, directors should also be aware of the circumstances in which they could be personally liable for the company’s tax debts. Our new quick guide sets out the main circumstances in which directors and other officers can be held to be personally liable for company tax.

UK Spring Budget 2021 - The Long Road to Recovery: Taxation
The UK Spring Budget Statement delivered by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, on Wednesday 3 March 2021, laid bare the scale of the economic damage done by COVID-19. The Chancellor’s focus was on initiating an investment-led recovery, to incentivise investment, productivity and growth and to build a new, innovative and “green”, UK economy. In terms of tax policy, the Budget couples some (but actually surprisingly few) tax rises with several innovative tax incentive measures.
Hang Fire for Revised Guidance on Changes to VAT and Early Termination Payments
This blog is a follow-up to our recent blogs on HMRC’s controversial Changes to VAT and Early Termination Payments and VAT on Compensation in Intellectual Property Settlements. As previously noted, the retrospective nature of the changes and the consequential risk of having to unpick historic settlement payments raised a number of issues. This has now resulted in HRMC’s plans to issue further guidance on the subject.
Freeports in England - The Tax Offering
Truck transport container on the road to the port. On Monday 16 November 2020, the UK government published the Freeports Bidding Prospectus, formally opening the bidding process to establish what it hopes will be at least seven new Freeports across England. The devolved administrations will oversee their own bidding process for creating new Freeports in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Here we look at the six key tax reliefs in more depth.
VAT on Compensation Payments in Intellectual Property Settlements
This blog is a follow-up to our recent blog on HMRC’s surprising Changes to VAT and Early Termination Payments. As we noted, HMRC’s updated guidance is proving to be highly controversial. What’s happened? Folks are unhappy because the updated guidance treats contract termination payments (including for breach or withdrawal or under liquidated damages clauses) as supplies for VAT (i.e. taxable), when they were previously treated as outside the scope of VAT. Retrospective application.
Brexit: UK VAT - No Relief for Cross-border Sellers
The UK will leave the EU VAT area at the end of the Transition period on 31 December 2020. From 1 January 2021, there will be fundamental changes to the VAT treatment of goods arriving into Great Britain. The changes are intended to ensure that goods imported from EU and non-EU countries are all treated in the same way and that UK producers are not disadvantaged. However, the change means that any business that imports goods from the EU will be significantly impacted.
UK Freeports - The Tax Angle
On Wednesday 7 October 2020, the UK government published the Response document to the Freeports Consultation that was originally launched in February 2020. With the UK simultaneously negotiating multiple new free trade agreements, freeports could make a significant contribution to making the UK’s post-Brexit economic and trade policy truly global. The creation of freeports is a flagship policy for the UK government. It touches on so many of the government’s core aims and objectives.
UK Directors Now Face Potential Liability for Company Taxes
While much of the focus of the insolvency and restructuring world has (rightly and understandably) been on the fundamental changes introduced under the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act 2020, it is worth remembering that there have been major tax changes too. The Finance Act 2020 introduced new rules making directors, shadow directors and certain others jointly and severally liable for a company’s tax liabilities in insolvency situations.

UK Tax Implications on Business Restructurings
As the government slowly ‘unlocks’ the British economy, and activity adapts to the new normal alongside coronavirus, the hope must be that latent consumer demand triggers a rapid, equally dramatic, recovery in GDP and jobs, allowing businesses to boost cash-flow and repay debt.
Strange Details Accrete: Marian Womack’s Weird Tales of Slow Catastrophe
APRIL 13, 2019 AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier! — Gerard Manley Hopkins, “The Windhover” ¤ WHEN FIRST I SAW the kestrel, I thought it a figment of drunkenness, of fever, of hunger and thirst — a figment threshing its wings, hanging against the lurid dusk over the sea. So long had it been since I’d last seen a bird, I was unsure the thing was real.
