There's nothing 'liberal' about the new left
There are various things at my stage of life that drive me utterly mad. Too many to list. But here’s the main one currently: Otherwise, commendable political commentators like Sherelle Jacobs, Rod Liddle, Tim Stanley and David Goodhart referring to the contemporary left as being in some way ‘liberal’ or even ‘hyper liberal’.
Emmanuel Macron is here to stay
The first-round of this year’s presidential elections in France is over, and the results are in. President Macron leads with 28.5 per cent of the vote, entering the second round rematch against the right-wing Marine Le Pen who, at 24.6 per cent, has never been closer to power. The far-leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon outdid his performance five years ago, reaching third place with a strong 20.3 per cent.
China and Russia’s hypocritical foreign policy
The Beijing Winter Olympics feature placative themes of international unity. ‘Together for a shared future!’ is President Xi’s chosen slogan for this year’s games. Yet the sentiment rings hollow in light of a statement Xi released during the opening ceremony alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. A four-part document, it lays out the two leaders’ position on international relations for the ensuing decade. It is also a subtle attack on the Euro-Atlantic alliance.
Google's plans to manipulate the words we use threaten freedom of expression
Are the words you write on a computer yours? We all have cliches and stereotypes knocking around in our head, easy crutches to deploy when trying to make a point, but most of us would like to believe that our thoughts are our own, our ideas are ours, and that when we tap out emails and work documents, there is an unmediated connection between the ideas in our mind and our words on the screen. That’s self-expression, one of the most important freedoms that we enjoy.
