Mesoscale Covariation in the Plant–Soil Neighbourhood of a South African Montane Grassland
1 Introduction Plant–soil relationships are the foundation of terrestrial life, sustaining global ecosystems through biomass and food production, nutrient cycling and microbial activity, stress tolerance and ecosystem regulation (Ehrenfeld 2013; Ormiston 2025). Plant–soil relationships maintain ecosystem multifunctionality and resilience, and the strength and balance of these interactions are key to reversing degradation (Gao et al. 2025).
Improving Malaria Parasite Gene Flow Inference Under Sparse Spatial Sampling
1 Introduction Population genetic analyses offer insights into demographic and adaptive processes, such as migration and natural selection, respectively (Moorjani and Hellenthal 2023; Degroot et al. 2022). Such knowledge is key in fields like conservation biology (Zhao et al. 2023; Librado et al. 2021) and epidemiology (Shetty et al. 2019; Li et al. 2020), especially when these processes are considered in a geographic context.

Adopt-a-Pet.com Review: "Not impressed"
This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback. Found a dog in the size and temperament we assumed would get along with our 3 year old mix breed and 3 cats plus turtles and tortoises we have had for over thirty years. Submitted required paperwork assuming we would be scheduled for a meet & greet which makes perfect sense. We are on day four and have never heard back from the family fostering the pup we are interested in.

Benchmarking and optimization of methods for the detection of identity-by-descent in high-recombining Plasmodium falciparum genomes
Replications of simulations are conducted at two levels: (1) Replication of simulation sets: For each combination of simulation parameters, we performed n = 3 full sets of simulations of populations and sampled n = 1000 haploid genomes per population.

Phylogenetic Analyses of the Burrowing Members in the Freshwater Crayfish Genera Fallicambarus and Procambarus in Arkansas
Keywords phylogenetic analyses, burrowing members, freshwater crayfish, Procamabarus, Fallicambarus Abstract There are an estimated 338 taxa of freshwater crayfish in the United States, with approximately 48% considered to be endangered, threatened, or of special concern (Taylor et al. 1996). Life history information for the majority of the primary burrowing species is lacking because they dig deep burrows and venture out only during breeding periods.
Benchmarking and Optimization of Methods for the Detection of Identity-By-Descent in High-Recombining Plasmodium falciparum
Abstract Genomic surveillance is crucial for identifying at-risk populations for targeted malaria control and elimination. Identity-by-descent (IBD) is increasingly being used in Plasmodium population genomics to estimate genetic relatedness, effective population size (Ne), population structure, and signals of positive selection. Despite its potential, a thorough evaluation of IBD segment detection tools for species with high recombination rates, such as P. falciparum, remains absent.
Persistence of the African baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) in a system experiencing chronic utilization by elephants
1 INTRODUCTION Natural systems are experiencing unprecedented pressures that threaten their configuration (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005; Shukla et al., 2019). While research efforts in natural areas have increasingly focused on the impacts of global scale drivers in recent decades, particularly global climate change, the effects of local scale drivers remain important.

Abstract Genomic surveillance is crucial for identifying at-risk populations for targeted malaria control and elimination. Identity-by-descent (IBD) is being used in Plasmodium population genomics to estimate genetic relatedness, effective population size (Ne), population structure, and positive selection. However, a comprehensive evaluation of IBD segment detection tools is lacking for species with high rates of recombination. Here, we employ genetic simulations reflecting P.
Adult expression of the cell adhesion protein Fasciclin 3 is required for the maintenance of adult olfactory interneurons
Abstract The proper functioning of the nervous system is dependent on the establishment and maintenance of intricate networks of neurons that form functional neural circuits. Once neural circuits are assembled during development, a distinct set of molecular programs is likely required to maintain their connectivity throughout the lifetime of the organism.

Letter: Cocaine in White House
Initially, I found it quite concerning that cocaine was recently found in the west wing of the White House. Hopefully, the current administration is not involved. Possibly the former could be suspect? Does it really matter? Instead of playing the blame game, let us remember the misguided words of Nancy Reagan’s famous catchphrase “Just Say No”. Ironically, we now have hypocritical political figures who say no to human rights and decency while “high” on their horses.
A new way to track truck pollution | Greenbiz
SunPower, a solar power and energy services provider, is starting to ship solar panels in electric heavy-duty trucks powered by — you guessed it — solar energy. The question that communities and investors are starting to ask is, why isn’t everybody? How long can a company go without a plan to end goods transport powered by fossil fuels, and what are the health and climate consequences of the status quo?
Is Neck Crepitus Something to Worry About
Your body is essentially one big sound system that generates many interesting noises. When you’re hungry, your stomach rumbles. After a satisfying meal, you might emit a hearty belch. You yawn when you’re sleepy, and you might snore when catching some well-deserved rest. What's that snap-crackle-popping sound coming from your neck? However, you weren’t expecting your neck to join the show. You’ve recently noticed some strange neck cracking or neck popping sounds during normal neck movements.
100% zero-emissions trucks. How close are we?
While the delivery trucks and tractor trailers that distribute goods and cargo make up only about 4% of vehicles on U.S. roads, they are responsible for nearly half of the NOx emissions and nearly 60 percent of the fine particulates from all vehicles, and about 7% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. This pollution causes serious harm to our climate and health — from asthma and other respiratory conditions, to premature deaths — that often hit disadvantaged communities hardest because...

In the beginning…there was these here journalisms
Mine has been a career of crime – no, seriously, I spent more than 15 years primarily covering and writing stories about courts and crime at such venerable newspaper titles as Newsday (its great, pioneering foray into the Hudson Valley), the New York Daily News, (best, nicest, most helpful, inspiring reporting colleagues), The Wall Street Journal, where I was among a handful of “contract reporters.” The Journal News and its online version Lohud (never understood the “logic” behind the...
Trump can't kill state efforts to curb pollution: California is the latest example
As the Trump administration continues to tear down critical environmental and public health protections, an opposite trend is gaining momentum in states that understand what our president doesn’t: It’s possible to curb pollution while growing our economy. The latest example of such state leadership is California’s recent decision to cut emissions from the oil and gas industry.

Derailed - The Pathfinder - The New Yorker
“I just dropped out of nowhere,” Sam Shepard said of his arrival in New York, at nineteen, in the fall of 1963. “It was absolute luck that I happened to be there when the whole Off-Off Broadway movement was starting.” Shepard, a refugee from his father’s farm in California, had spent eight months as an actor travelling the country by bus with a Christian theatre troupe, the Bishop’s Company Repertory Players.
Social Media Feeds Motorcycle Madness
The 911 calls began around 3 p.m. on Sunday, with dozens of people reporting a reckless pack of 20 to 50 motorcyclists heading west on Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County. About an hour later, seven bikers were charged with various offenses: One motorcyclist sped into oncoming traffic lanes, forcing car drivers to swerve off the road to avoid him, police said.

Eastchester family escapes fire after hero dog raises alarm
A 5-year-old shih-tzu named Rocky is being hailed as a hero Wednesday following an overnight house fire in Eastchester. The Aloia family dog started barking as smoke from the 4 a.m. blaze began to fill the two-story frame home at 132 Lake Shore Drive, Eastchester Fire Chief Michael Grogan said. Rocky's barking awakened Mario and Carol Aloia, the homeowners, and their four children to the fire. They escaped as smoke from the blaze under the floorboards and in the walls began to envelop the home.

Samuel Cruz's family plans lawsuit against New Rochelle police in fatal shooting
The family of Samuel Cruz on Wednesday intends to file a notice of claim -- a prelude to a civil rights suit -- against the City of New Rochelle and its police department over the May 26 shooting death of the mentally ill man, said an attorney retained by Cruz's widow, Elsa. The family has hired the same lawyers who filed a federal lawsuit against the City of White Plains on behalf of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr.'s family.
Masked robber strikes Hawthorne gas station for second time in two weeks, police say
A masked bandit has apparently hit the same Citgo gas station in Hawthorne twice in the last two weeks, police said Tuesday. The robber, described as a dark-skinned male about 6-feet tall, entered the 24-hour Citgo station convenience store at 376 Bradhurst Ave. at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday and demanded money. The robber had his face covered with a black and white bandanna, Mount Pleasant police Lt. Robert Miliambro said.

Westchester County Jail: Officials, critics spar about conditions
Four years after federal officials found inmates at the Westchester County Jail were abused by correction officers, and received poor medical and mental health services, not much has changed, critics charge. "I'd really like to see the feds come back in there and take another look and see for themselves that this administration has not done what it's supposed to do," said Lyndon...
Constance Post, Wayne Charles say they can't afford lawyers for corruption retrial
The price of freedom might prove too rich for former Mount Vernon Planning Commissioner Constance "Gerrie" Post and her businessman boyfriend Wayne Charles. Lawyers for the pair told U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas Monday that Post and Charles likely will need to hire court-appointed attorneys if federal prosecutors appeal Karas' decision overturning their 2009 public corruption convictions -- or if the government decides to put them on trial again.
Nyack College blast traced to gas line damaged by worker, police say
A Nyack College groundskeeper operating heavy excavation equipment apparently struck the gas line that triggered the June 4 gas explosion that injured eight people, South Nyack police said Monday. Two students at the private, evangelical 3,300-student Christian college were hospitalized as a result of the blast outside Sky Island Lodge, a two-story academic building on the 102-acre campus.

Orange County DA Frank Phillips 'not happy' about retiring after 28 years
Those are some of the kinder words Frank Phillips' critics have used to describe the Orange County district attorney who will retire at the end of the year after seven terms as the county's top prosecutor. A softer side emerged recently as he recounted a speech he made in May at the Jason Conklin Memorial Lodge where he recited the names, dates and circumstances of every Orange County police officer killed in the line of duty during the last four decades.
James Comey, Yonkers native, named FBI director
President Barack Obama has named James Comey to be the new FBI director. Comey was the No. 2 Justice Department official under Republican President George W. Bush. Obama says Comey is a model of "fierce independence and deep integrity." Comey gained attention for blocking efforts by the Bush White House to reauthorize a no-warrant wiretapping program in 2004. If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Robert Mueller and serve a 10-year tenure.
