What was your first job as a journalist?
Reporter for my high school newspaper
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yup! I used my mom's typewriter as a kid.
How is social media changing news?
Social media makes it harder to distinguish what's real and what's fake. However, it also gives new opportunities for journalists to connect.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Kermit the Frog, of course.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram, I suppose.
Who do you wish followed you?
I would love for more scientists and researchers to follow me and pitch me.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yup! I was a feature writer, page editor and copy editor.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm most proud of stories that help drive change.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stay snoopy. It's what you're paid to do.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I like pitches that help me understand how I can create a story arc. A lot of pitches include facts and numbers but not a good story.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I've gotten a few pitches that had nothing to do with my beat (environment). Those waste everyone's time.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I'm working out, walking my dog, gardening, hiking, biking or traveling.

I have no idea!
