Chilliwow Mexican Cantina & Bar
It's difficult to say whether the experience I had with Chilliwow Mexican Cantina & Bar was evidence of growing pains, since the much talked about Mexican themed bar had just opened a few days earlier. In the lead up to the opening, there has been plenty of talk via a clever social media campaign about the Valleys newest themed concept bar. Unfortunately on my visit they failed to raise the bar service wise, or for that matter put the wow in Chilliwow in terms of their service.
Drawn From Bees - Live Music Review
Performing as part of the line-up for 4Senses at The Bridge Club, Drawn From Bees headlined the night, and had the room moving and grooving. Drawn From Bees perform They Close The Door @ 4Senses Drawn From Bees are a highly under-rated band here in Brisbane. Calling themselves art-rock / indie / alternative, their recorded tunes are lush with sound, with lyrics that paint rich imagery and amazing harmonies, and their live performance certainly demonstrated the same.
Laique - Live Music Review
The first time I saw Laique, I was introduced to them by a swing-dancing friend of mine. They were performing at the Wunderbar, part of Brisbane Festival, a couple of years ago. They call themselves "One frock and four suits!" and performed at Black Bear Lodge recently as part of a double-bill with Mzaza. Laique are Kylie Southwell on vocals and banjo, Samuel Vincent on double bass, Gerard Mapstone on guitar and banjo and Will Eager on drums, and call their music swing / folk / pop.
Royal Mail Hotel Goodna
The Royal Mail Hotel, Goodna, is home to so much live music, it almost bursts with it. Friday night, Saturday afternoon and evening and regularly on Sundays as well. When we were there, the Dillion James Band was playing, with a different line-up than last time I saw him (read my review here).
Daisie May - Live Music Review
I first came across Daisie May last year as part of the Brisbane Festival free live music program, and I caught another of their gigs at The Hideaway recently. Daisie May are a a Brisbane-based four-piece who call themselves dark pop rock and are described as "post-feminist heart-on-sleeve lyrics with indie rock and punk energy" by Time Off Magazine. They are fronted by Pauline Maudy (also of Mzaza) on vocals, with Matt Ward on guitar, Jay Kleinschmidt on bass and Jay Richmond on drums.
Jimmy Watts Band - Live Music Review
Headlining the Mae Tao Clinic Fundraiser, Jimmy Watts Band brought their blues / roots / alt-country to the stage at the zoo. With a core four-piece band; frontman Jimmy Watts on acoustic guitars and vocals, Mellissa Hender on African percussion, Paul Young on drums and Mike Leo on bass, they were joined by Melbourne's Silas Palmer on keys and the Swoon duo on harmonies and guitar. The gig doubled as a soft-launch, in Brisbane, of their second album "January's Pages".
Bart Thrupp - Live Music Review
Toowoomba local Bart Thrupp is a one-man music machine. Playing acoustic folk / pop, I saw him play at The Beetle Bar recently. Supporting Night Time Fiona, Bart warmed up the crowd with his storytelling songs. I especially liked the story he told the crowd about being a BluesFest last year, having room to take only one guitar and breaking two strings during his first song.
Silver Sircus - Band Review
Silver Sircus is another one of those bands that has been on my radar for a while now. On a recent Sunday afternoon, they played a gig at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the ReStrung festival. Featuring a cream of the Brisbane's musician crop, Parmis Rose on keys, Sallie Campbell on violin, Lucinda Shaw on vocals, James Lees on drums, Terry Dixon on guitar and Wayne Jennings on cello.
The Rooftops - Band Review
The Rooftops are one of those bands that you just can't help but like. With a new album on the way, recorded, mixed, mastered by Stephen Anning, they performed a preview of their upcoming album Everything To Everyone recently at The Joynt to a mass of happy punters. The Rooftops play at The Joynt, November 2012 Bringing a seven-piece on the night, The Rooftops are fronted by Euan Gray, who performs vocals and on an antique-looking tenor sax.

Waxing Lyrical @ Brisbane Powerhouse
On the second Saturday of each month, three singer / songwriters take to the Turbine Stage at the Brisbane Powerhouse to chat about their inspiration and perform their songs. This is one of the many free programs available at the Powerhouse in New Farm. In March, Kellie Lloyd hosted the lover (Alan Boyle), the joker (Asa Broomhall) and the fighter (Alex Henriksson of Bang Bang Boss Kelly and John and Alexander).
