Gopherfolk Mini
Just posted a Gopherfolk mini. It’s a wizard. Or magic user. Whatever. I recommend painting it like a golden gopher. ‘Cause that was what I did. It’s at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6434708 if you want to print it!
Install and Setup mongodb on a Mac
I don’t write as much about what I do at my day job as I used to. I probably should, because it’s all still relavant to my older readers. One example of that is that I have published a lot of articles on MySQL and sqlite. However, more and more of my development efforts use native json. I’ve slowly fallen in love with mongodb for this reason – I can have a local database that is fast, that stores data in native json. That makes my transactions cheaper when it’s time to read and write for databases.
Bucky The Badgerfolk (Mustie) Ranger
Published this design to Thingiverse for that special spot in the venn diagram – people who went to the University of Wisconsin, play D&D, and like to 3D print your minis. His name is Bucky.

Our Journey To A Quantum-Safe Secret Manager
Once upon a time, when the COVID was upon us, I retreated into my lab to write a book on the history of computing. I was fortunate, privileged, and delighted to get the chance to interview some of the people who built the foundational technologies that power our digital lives. People who invented the first data packets, installed the first nodes on the internet, developed the first search engines, and founders of companies that have become household names.
Penn State and MacAD.UK Presentations
Working on presentations is always fun! Here are two that I’m giving this summer. The first is part one of a deck on Extensions Management (and more on the past of managing them). That was delivered at MacAD.UK and I’ll post the video once those are up. The second is a deeper dive into the current state of extensions management, which I’m giving at Penn State MacAdmins. Hope these help someone in some way, shape, or form.
New App TestFairy Writes Unit Tests With AI
I just posted a new app to GitHub called TestFairy. It’s at https://github.com/krypted/TestFairy. It automatically generates unit tests for either a file or a highlighted piece of swift code. It does this using the OpenAI API, so leverages a LLM to write test code. It’s pretty straight forward. Simply highlight the code and in the Editor Menu, click TestFairy, then Generate Tests.
Python script to identify CIDR notation
It’s not uncommon to expect Cidr Notation vs an IP address in a script (e.g. one that’s being passed to another API.
Using Viruses For Good
I get prompted any time one of my books is cited in legitimate research journals.
Regulation And Coexistence With AI
I’ve been writing little machine learning and AI bits of code for a pretty long time and while I’m not very good at it, I feel like the one thing I’ve learned is not to look for what I want to see. “Lying with statistics” was one of the most impactful courses I took in college. The confirmation bias in my works before and after we’re substantially different.
Detect Deepfakes and Hacked Audio Programmatically
Deepfakes are a type of synthetic media where a person replaces parts of an image or video with something else, like someone’s likeness. The act of creating deepfakes is known as deepfakery. Deepfakes can be used to create fake news, spread misinformation, or damage someone’s reputation. They can also be used by a service like JibJab just to be funny, although those are obviously cartoonish and not meant to actually fool anyone. There are a number of different approaches to detecting deepfakes.
HTTP Success and Error Codes
When you make a Request to a web server, the server will respond with a status Code. The status code indicates whether the request was successful or not, and if not, what the error was.
Google Cloud Function to convert JSON to YAML
This function takes Json data as an input, uses the json and yaml modules to convert JSON data to YAML and then returns with the YAML.
Detecting LLM-Generated Code
Large language models (LLMs) are a type of artificial intelligence that generates text, translates languages, writes different kinds of creative content, creates net-new artistic works, and answers questions in an informative way. They are trained on massive datasets of text and Code, and can learn to produce human-quality output. Because of how they import massive troves of data and create similar content, they can then be fairly formulaic in their output.
MacAD.UK Presentation (with notes) on Extensions
I’ve been working on this Presentation for a long time, so it was awesome to get the first chunk of it out there. Then I saw Graham Pugh publish his with presenter notes included and was like “oh Graham’s really, really smart, so I’ll copy him!” so here’s mine: Related Articles 20 Best Places to Eat in Cork City: T… It's Time For Spring Cleaning, Do You… The wait is over – It’s time to begin… What Do Singers Do?
Detecting AI-Generated (LLM) Content In Articles
Tags: sentence llms script We hear more and more about the pros and cons of AI. There is a movement to regulate the use, movies about dangers of sentient robots, and those who think AI will free humanity from any boring work, or work that involves a lot of repetitive tasks.

Google Cloud Function to convert YAML to a plist
TLDR: The GCF at https://github.com/krypted/tinyconverters/blob/main/GCF_YAML_to_PLIST.py will convert basic Yaml to PLISTs. Here’s a Google Cloud Function that converts YAML to a property list. The function takes the YAML data as an event object, uses the yaml and plistlib modules to convert the YAML data to a property list, and returns the property list.

Google Cloud Function To Validate Email Addresses
The following is a simple Google Cloud Function that will validate that text entered into a field (passed to the function in the request body when called) is a valid format of an Email Address. Google Cloud Function To Add JSON To A Cloud SQL Database
Here’s a Google Cloud Function that takes some arbitrary json (in json_data) and posts it to a new record in a Cloud SQL database. No error handling or deduplication/matching, just a straight post: https://github.com/krypted/tinyconverters/blob/548892cc377e1063770ab4a8cd53dc6573bae950/json_to_cloud_SQL.py Before using, it needs information to connect to the database, so customize the INSTANCE_NAME, DATABASE_NAME, and TABLE_NAME for the INSERT.
Google Cloud Function To Add JSON To A Google Sheet
Here’s a Google Cloud Function that uses the Google Sheets API to add arbitrary json to a Google Sheet: https://github.com/krypted/tinyconverters/blob/main/json_to_GoogleSheet.py To use the function, create a Google Cloud project and enable the Google Sheets API. Then create a service account and download the JSON key file for that account and place it in the same directory as the script.

Google Cloud Function To Convert Property Lists To JSON Documents
I’ve written a lot of little scripts to convert files or types from one format to another, over the years. It’s easier to import something that can do the work for you and just use a Lambda or a Google Cloud Function that you call from other tools. This is the microservice way.
Google Cloud Function To Encrypt A JSON Document With An ECC Key
Tags: json document encrypted json document json To use this function, create a Google Cloud Function that uses the encrypt_json() function in Google Cloud Console or the gcloud command-line tool. import json import base64 from google.cloud import kms def encrypt_json(event, context): """Encrypts a JSON document with an ECC key. Small Go Script To Send Some JSON To An Endpoint
Tags: err nil fmtprintlnerr nil fmtprintlnerr err nil The following was written to act as a Google Cloud Function or Lambda, and sends a simple POST to a standard rest endpoint at https://krypted.com/api/v1/sites with the json defined in jsonObject. The endpoint can easily be changed in http.NewRequest or converted to a variable. The response to the POST is then returned as stdout.

Creating Unit Tests With Google Bard
Unit tests are one of those things that evolve over time. When we talk about test coverage, anyone that thinks they have full coverage is kidding themselves, but it’s not uncommon for my workflows to just build some stuff and go back and fill in the unit tests before I bring in a second person. And yet… we know we need to do them. Sometimes I’ve gotten help with this specific part of projects from sites like Upwork.
Make The Keychain Work When Compiling Your Own NoMAD
Yesterday, I wrote up how to compile your own version of an open source Xcode app and used Nomad as an example, for those who didn’t want to use the precompiled application bundle. Many software packages have permissions to do do various tasks. NoMAD interacts with the keychain, so will have to use a TeamID, or to expand the term, the Team Identifier Prefix.
Quick And Dirty Guide To Compiling Your Own Version Of An Open Source Xcode Project For Testing
There are plenty of apps out there that can be beneficial to an organization, but don’t really make sense to live on an app store. This might be because the app uses private APIs, breaks acceptable design patterns, needs to be customized for every use case, is just proof of concept code, etc, etc, etc. Anyone with an Apple Developer Certificate can compile an app to test it on their local machine.

Block attachments with htm or html extensions and/or javascript in Office365
Spammers have been getting craftier with how they get through the bayesian and other heuristic filters many mail providers use to deliver only legitimate emails to recipients. One of the ways they do this is by encoding or encapsulating patterns into base64 or some other encoding mechanism. This allows the email client to render a Message with text that would have been blocked by a spam filter as the filter usually can’t comprehend the encoded strings.
