Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

It was working for Eyes on Isles as a freelancer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Once. But I'm not that old.

How is social media changing news?

It's taking the context out of the news. There isn't enough reporting around the news to understand the entire truth.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Arthur Staple.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To find fun stories.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't know

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email is the best way to be pitched stories.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

The biggest tools I use are ChatGPT to make sure I'm speaking in an active voice and Grammarly to ensure I didn't make a typo.

What's your favorite social network?

I don't have one.

Who do you wish followed you?

The people who want to follow me.

Why did you become a journalist?

About six years ago after a long career in the public service.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. We didn't have one to work on, sadly.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The last story I wrote is the one I'm the proudest writing.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep at it. Just keep working and grinding.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime of the day is great. Pitch away!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Any NHL pitch is the next best pitch for me.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Getting a pitch on a subject I clearly had no expertise in was the worst.

What's your favorite drink?

A hoppy IPA please!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the woods.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atheltic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That the NHL has no potential going forward.
