Momentum carries us forward on mission
Photo vis Unsplash. This summer has been a full and exciting season of ministry. I’ve had the privilege of meeting with churches and associations across our state, and I keep coming away with the same conviction: North Carolina Baptists are mobilized for mission. As we gear up for fall, it’s worth pausing to celebrate what God has done — and to let that momentum push us toward what’s next.
Mobilizing for a summer of gospel impact
Photo via N.C. Baptists. Every summer, thousands of students attend programs at one of the three N.C. Baptist camps at Caraway, Fort Caswell and Truett, and many make life-changing decisions for Christ. School’s out, but ministry is ramping up in North Carolina and beyond. N.C. Baptist churches are gearing up for a summer of gospel opportunities. God is stirring hearts and calling people to step boldly into His work. Will you join us?
NC Baptists and ERLC place 100th ultrasound machine
North Carolina Baptists have been a longtime partner in advocating for the lives of our smallest neighbors, pre-born children. They have generously donated nearly 10% of the ultrasound machines that the ERLC’S Psalm 139 Project has placed in pregnancy resource centers. On today’s episode, ERLC President-Elect, Dr. Evan Lenow speaks with Todd Unzicker about this ongoing partnership to save lives.
Establishing the work of our hands
Photo via Unsplash. “Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands — establish the work of our hands!” — Psalm 90:17 As we step into a new year, this verse continues to guide my prayers. Throughout 2025, I asked God to “establish the work of our hands” across North Carolina — in our churches, our communities and in the lives of people who desperately need the hope of the gospel. God showed His favor in unmistakable ways.
GUEST COLUMN: 6 spiritual lessons from the rise and fall of Sherrone Moore
Unsplash photo. As a former sports reporter, I cannot help but still keep a watchful eye on the sport I enjoy so much. Every now and then, the chaos that is college football crosses from the football crazies like me to the talk of the nation. This was the case again this week when the University of Michigan shockingly announced the firing of their head football coach, Sherrone Moore.
On Mission Together: Gather around the Great Commission
Photo by David Cook (N.C. Baptists). Photo Description Todd Unzicker, N.C. Baptist executive director-treasurer, will outline a comprehensive missions mobilization strategy during his address at the annual meeting. N.C. Baptists, it’s almost time for one of my favorite gatherings of the year — our annual meeting. I can’t wait to see you Nov. 10-11 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. This year’s theme, “On Mission Together,” highlights our shared calling in the Great Commission.
One year later, Helene rebuild continues amid gospel hope
Photo by K. Brown, N.C. Baptists on Mission. One year ago, Hurricane Helene reached western North Carolina, leaving behind a trail of destruction from which many are still recovering today. The devastation was widespread. Floods swept through towns, trees and power lines came down, and families lost their homes. Churches were damaged and lives uprooted. But North Carolina Baptists immediately showed up, ready to serve.
Every church, every community: Let’s ServeNC again
Contributed photo. Last summer, we challenged N.C. Baptist churches to commit to serve their local communities in tangible ways, and they showed up. Nearly 1,200 churches in 92 of North Carolina’s 100 counties participated, caring for their neighbors through both practical and creative service projects. These acts of service sparked ongoing connections in their communities. From the mountains to the coast, N.C. Baptist churches acted as the hands and feet of Jesus during ServeNC Week.
Why cooperation is important now more than ever
Cooperation is a hallmark of Baptist life. For North Carolina Baptists, “on mission together” is more than a slogan. We act on the firm belief that we can accomplish more together than we can apart. We are independent but not isolated. Now more than ever, cooperation is vital to our mission of making Christ’s name known among the nations. As autonomous churches, we each function in our own context, style and strengths, but we link arms for the sake of the gospel.
Baptism is step one in following Jesus
A 2024 study by Lifeway Research found that Easter still ranked as the day with the highest attendance for most churches. In the study, 90% of pastors surveyed said Easter was either their church’s highest, second-highest or third-highest attended service, with more than half (52%) identifying Easter as the day with the most attendees.
Why NC Baptists are together for missions • Biblical Recorder
“On mission together” is more than just a slogan for N.C. Baptists. It represents our shared identity. This is who we are as God’s people. As a movement of churches — a community of believers saved by God’s grace through faith — we have been called by God to go on mission together and bring this good news of salvation to all people.
Caring for pastors in all kinds of churches
As a fellow church member, I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the pastors in my life who have devoted countless hours to equip me to do the work of ministry. You and I both would likely not be where we are today had it not been for the steady and faithful leadership of our local pastors. These men of God have sacrificed much to see Christ’s church flourish for the sake of the mission. That’s why every October we take time to show gratitude to our pastors through Pastor Appreciation Month.
Let’s tell a better story through ‘ServeNC’
As hundreds of churches across our state gear up to “ServeNC” from Aug. 3-10, it’s important for us to pause and reflect on the reasons we partner together for an initiative such as this. The world around us is hurting. People need relief and hope found in the gospel now more than ever.
Why we partner: 4 goals of ‘on mission together’ churches
One reason I love serving with N.C. Baptists is because of the many opportunities it’s given me to visit churches across the state. God has blessed us with a wide diversity of churches. Since joining with N.C. Baptists in 2021, I’ve had the chance to worship in established rural churches, bustling megachurches and everything in between. No two congregations have been alike.
What I’m choosing to remember this Easter
Reflecting on my childhood, it’s pretty clear to me that I grew up in the world of “cultural Christianity.” I grew up hearing all of the Bible stories. I went to church on Sundays. At one point, I even made a profession of faith. If you had asked me if I was a Christian, I would have said, “Yes.” But in reality, I was not a follower of Christ – instead, I was following my own heart. By the time I was in my late 20s, this lifestyle led me to a place of hopelessness and despair.
On mission together to protect human life
Much has changed in the landscape of abortion access in the United States over the past couple of years. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade nearly two years ago was a significant victory in the pro-life movement, but the fight to protect preborn lives and care for vulnerable mothers has continued at both the state and federal levels.
By Todd Unzicker, Executive Director-Treasurer, N.C. Baptists
N.C. Baptists have a long and demonstrated history of strong support for international missions. Evidence of that support was on display during last month’s annual meeting in Greensboro. During the meeting, we heard from International Mission Board (IMB) President Paul Chitwood during a joint Sending Celebration between N.C. Baptists and the IMB during which we recognized and prayed over about 30 missionaries from our state who have recently answered the call to take the gospel to the nations.
4 reasons I’m looking forward to annual meeting
N.C. Baptists, I can’t wait to gather with you for this year’s annual meeting at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. There is so much to be excited about, it’s hard to list everything. But let me share four reasons you do not want to miss our annual meeting on Nov. 6-7. Missions N.C. Baptists and the International Mission Board (IMB) are hosting a joining Sending Celebration to highlight men and women who have accepted God’s call to take the gospel to the nations.
How you can love and honor your pastor
Years ago, I remember circling 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 in my Bible and writing beside those verses in the margin, “Love your pastor!” In this passage, the Apostle Paul shares some encouragement and instruction on how to love and honor those who have been called to lead and shepherd us in the local church.
NCMO helps people find everlasting hope in Christ
Is your life filled with such joy and peace that it overflows with hope? We all fall short of that standard to varying degrees, but that’s the kind of life that Scripture describes for those who know and follow Christ. In Romans 15:13, the Apostle Paul writes, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (CSB).
How you can lead with joy and happiness
We’re just a few days out from this year’s annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in New Orleans, and I’m looking forward to seeing lots of N.C. Baptists there. No matter where the national convention is held, N.C. Baptists always rank among the highest number of attendees. I don’t expect this year to be any different, and I look forward to seeing many of you in the Crescent City. If you’re going to be in New Orleans, be sure to stop by the N.C. Baptist booth in the exhibit hall.
How God is moving among the next generation
Several weeks ago after preaching in one of our local N.C. Baptist churches, one of the senior adult ladies in that congregation approached me to introduce herself. “I’ve liked the things I’ve heard about you, and it’s good to finally meet you,” she said. “But there’s one thing I hope you never do.” “What’s that?” I asked, not knowing what to expect.
Easter: An ideal time to evangelize and baptize
One of the ways I like to encourage people is to tell them to do what you do for the glory of God, and do it strategically for the mission of God. We might immediately associate this principle to our professional lives, but it applies to our personal lives, as well. Have you ever stopped to consider how you can leverage your relationships and family rhythms for the sake of the gospel and the kingdom?

How you can be an advocate for the vulnerable and voiceless
Photo by David Cook In 2022, N.C. Baptists partnered with the Psalm 139 Project of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission to place two ultrasound units at pregnancy resource centers in eastern and western North Carolina. Last summer, I joined many of you in rejoicing over the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had granted access to abortion nationwide for nearly 50 years. Many wondered if we would ever see the day when abortion wasn’t the law of the land.
Pray for & connect with missionaries in 2023
As a movement of churches on mission together, we are all about the Great Commission. I am thankful for the many ways that is reflected in how our convention of 2,900 independent, autonomous churches partner together to plant churches, send missionaries and train up the next generation to see God’s kingdom come. N.C. Baptists can celebrate the historic and ongoing support for missionaries and church planters through praying, giving, going and sending.
Mentoring among ways to push back on pastor shortage
ALEXANDRIA, La. (BP) – Ray Swift spends a lot of time maintaining contact with churches across Louisiana. One thing apparent to him has become apparent to many – there are a lot of churches looking for pastors, and not nearly candidates enough to fill them. “The pool is getting smaller,” said Swift, director of the Pastoral Leadership Team for Louisiana Baptists. “There are just not as many who are surrendering to the call [to pastor].
FIRST-PERSON: Ongoing prayers for the end of Roe
CARY, N.C. (BP) – Nearly 50 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide through its decision in a case known as Roe v. Wade. Since that time, millions of Christians have been praying for the reversal of that decision, and now there are strong indications the high court is closer than ever. Monday evening a national news outlet released what it claimed was a draft opinion signaling that the court intends to make a decision in the current Dobbs v.
