Purism is proud to bring this innovation to the market in our Hardware Encrypted COMSEC Bundle. The Liberty Phone (or Librem 5 phone), running PureOS, has always had an encrypted hardware card slot, and these OpenPGP smartcards generate their own secret keys that are unable to be extracted off of them, and they handle the encryption and decryption on the card itself.

Software Updates that Respects Civil Liberties – Purism
Yet-another reminder of how disrespectful Apple, Google, and Microsoft are with their software update process was highlighted to Android phones that were in Massachusets, USA. The unintentionally descriptively named “MassNotify” application was installed to all Android phones in Mass.—en masse—without consent.
Apple's Subpoenas Show They Own You – Purism
Most journalists seem to miss the larger civil liberties point when Big Tech companies get subpoenas for people’s digital archives. With the most recent example being where the Justice Department subpoenaed Apple while being gagged from disclosing such a subpoena, it is time to remind nearly everybody: You don’t own your digital life, Big Tech does. If you did own your digital files You would get the warrant not a tech giant.
The Ball and Supply Chain – Purism
Every manufacturer has a supply chain, down to the raw materials suppliers whose supply chain is the earth itself. Links within the supply chain can (with difficulty) be swapped out for similar suppliers but each link in the chain and who controls that link is important.
The S in IOT is for Security – Purism
Recently I was given two LED desk lamps to improve lighting for video meetings, these are just lamps with three controls, on/off, temperature, and brightness. In the misguided vein of “make it an IOT device with an app to monetize human data” mentality the temperature and brightness control aren’t just knobs on the lamp, no, they are controlled by a proprietary app that you are forced (well… unless you hack it (as I explain below)) to download to your phone or computer.
Avoid "Advertiser ID" with the Librem 5 – Purism
Apple and Google profess to care about the privacy rights of their customers, but their operating systems tell a different story. iOS and Android both allow for pervasive tracking of users through Advertiser IDs. Google uses a version is known as GAID (Google Advertiser Identification) and Apple uses its version called IDFA (Identifier For Advertisers).
Technology as it Should Be – Purism
In Imagine a world without apps Shira Ovide asks “a wild question: What if we played games, shopped, watched Netflix and read news on our smartphones — without using apps? Our smartphones, like our computers, would instead mostly be gateways to go online through a web browser.” This question can be extrapolated into a larger question: “What do we want from our technology?” The power of control by Big-Tech in the app store is but a small example of exploitation of our digital lives.
Foreshadowing, Why the Purism Logo is a Rectangle – Purism
A logo carries meaning, it should be simple yet effective. The Purism logo; a simple rectangle; carries significant meaning and was foreshadowing what Purism is delivering. When I started Purism in 2014 I knew I wanted to build secure computing hardware bundled with a privacy-respecting operating system that had freedom-respecting applications and services.

As part of a top-to-bottom review of the online market, the US House Committee on the Judiciary initiated a bipartisan investiation into Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. What a No-Carrier Phone Could Look Like – Purism
Now that we are in the home stretch for the Librem 5 launch, it’s a good time to start discussing some visions for the future. While the Librem 5 can operate as a traditional cellular phone today, in this post we are going to discuss its potential as a “no-carrier phone.” The term “no-carrier phone” is used for a mobile phone that does not get its phone number from a carrier. This can take a couple of forms: a WiFi connection-only phone, or a Cellular Data connection-only phone.

Opinion: New generation of tech firms urges stronger privacy laws
Breaking News Legendary Bay Area trainer banned after latest horse death at Santa Anita By Todd Weaver and Brendan Eich Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently wrote about the importance of privacy in the New York Times, joining Facebook and others as purported converts to the cause. But while Big Tech publicly claims a change of heart about consumer privacy, it is at the same time quietly attempting to dismantle California’s new privacy law before it even goes into effect.

Control, Freedom and Harm – Purism
Control is the best measurement of both freedom and harm. If freedom can be summarized as not being under the control of another, harm can be summarized as being under the control of another. The darker side of “control vs. freedom” or “control + harm” casts a shadow on every facet of technologyâand it is a digital civil rights issue, where control over you by corporations is causing you harm, all the time, on all your devices. The answer is rather simple: Don’t. Control. People.

How Purism Works Upstream and Gives Back – Purism
One aspect in free software (and its copyleft licensing) is the benefit of releasing software for others to use as long as the same licensing terms are used. Purism has a long history of giving back and working with upstreams and continues to release everything Purism authors under free software licenses in accordance to Purism’s Social Purpose Corporation Articles of Incorporation.

How to Avoid the Frightful 5 Big Tech Corporations
So you’re wondering… You’re starting to question the moral values of Big Tech. You and your friends probably have a growing feeling of creepiness about the tech giants who have — like a poorly-acted villain — told you one thing, and given you another.
Purism Origin Story
One of the most common questions we get asked is why I started Purism. And given the growing importance of Purism’s mission amid the barrage of news about how large tech companies are surveilling and exposing their users, it seemed like an opportune time to share our origin story, and why I felt it was important to create this alternative to the status quo. When my first daughter was born, in 2007, her birth had a profound impact on me.
Librem 5 - A Security and Privacy Focused Phone
We believe phones should not track you nor exploit your digital life. We are in the middle of a digital rights revolution where you get to decide the future. We at Purism are building a phone that does not run Android nor iOS, but runs PureOS or any GNU/Linux distribution where all the source code is available. Note that the visual design of the phone is a work in progress and is subject to evolve based on technical requirements and people’s feedback.

Purism Software Freedom Deconstructed
Purism following its strict philosophy uses and installs completely free software, meaning there is no mystery software running anywhere within the kernel, the operating system, nor any software applications.
