Opinion: Prop. 38 is a business scheme disguised as a public health plan. Vote ‘no. Original
For over sixty years, we have been fighting for progressive budgets that make a difference for people who are struggling to get adequate health care, food, housing, childcare and the basic services that maintain human dignity. This year there’s a new threat to California’s ability to provide these life-supporting basic goods — it is on the November ballot for the voters to decide. The issue is Proposition 38. It directs the state to borrow $8.4 billion for immunology research.

Editor’s note: Tom Bates is the regional president of the Southeast for Advance Local. Kelly Ann Scott is the editor-in-chief and vice president of content for Alabama Media Group. We announced today that we will no longer publish The Birmingham News, Huntsville Times, Press-Register and Mississippi Press beginning in March of next year to focus on becoming an all-digital operation. But our news coverage will not miss a beat.
Opinion: Yes on Measure L
This November, Berkeley’s future is on the ballot. As current and former mayors, we know that residents have long ranked affordable housing, climate resiliency, and repairing our aging streets and infrastructure as top priorities. We’ve been listening, and Measure L is our response. While recent bonds have enabled the city to create affordable housing and improve parks, streets, and other public facilities, funds have been fully committed. We need Measure L to continue the progress.
Opinion: Measure MM sets back our efforts to provide homes for people with moderate incomes
A one-bedroom apartment in Berkeley rents for about $2,500 on average.¹ That amount is about half of what a Berkeley teacher earns per month on average!² How can teachers, nonprofit employees, artists, service workers and folks just starting their careers or families afford to build a life in Berkeley?
Reader's View: Don’t fall for Trump’s propaganda
Letters Written By: JoAnne and Tom Bates, Hermantown | Feb 29th 2020 - 8am. Supporters of President Donald Trump, answer us this: Is there anything Trump can do that would turn you away? He is a disrupter. Is that why you endlessly support him? Have you noticed that his companies don’t always need to make money because they sometimes are apparently used for dark-money deals (like his casino or his empty Trump tower in Baku, Azerbaijan)? Is it your dream to make millions at the expense of others?
Opinion: Buffy Wicks is the best choice for the 15th Assembly District
We have served a combined 34 years in the California Legislature and believe that Wicks shares our values and will bring her quite remarkable organizing experience to the Legislature. After an exceptionally crowded primary election, many of us were not sure how to choose between the “top two” remaining candidates.
Opinion: Celebrate $15 minimum wage for Berkeley workers
Today Berkeley ushers in a $15/hour minimum wage. How we got here is a good reminder of how we can work together on important issues instead of attacking each other on ideologies. On Oct. 1, 2018 Berkeley workers started earning $15 an hour. Berkeley is only one of about 21 cities across the nation that have adopted $15 minimum wages. In August of 2016, Berkeley unanimously passed the second fastest minimum wage in the nation.
OKLAHOMA NOW: National foster care month
In Oklahoma, foster care has received heightened attention over these last several years as we have worked to implement the Pinnacle Plan reforms. Recruiting an adequate number of stable foster homes is key to almost every goal of the plan.To support the Department of Human Services (DHS) and its private agency partners in meeting these recruitment goals, Gov. Mary Fallin launched the Oklahoma Fosters Campaign in November 2015.
