Naomi Osaka: Japanese Firepower
When Naomi Osaka came to the Harold Solomon Tennis Institute in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in 2014, it was obvious at first glimpse that her forehand had tremendous potential. You may be surprised to hear this, but she never really “hit the ball” even though we all knew she could. She was content with just hitting solid and not missing. At the Institute, as we refer to it, we labeled this as semi hitting.
Coaching Tips: Dominating Doubles
It always amazes me watching club level doubles. I see all sorts of things from seemingly never-ending crosscourt points between the two baseline players, players attempting to poach but hesitating so much so that they look afraid to make an error, players not using their strengths to maximum effect, players who do not follow the ball - the list could go on forever it seems. Watching strange events occur during doubles matches frustrates me.
Coach's Corner: The Panel System
Many years ago, I decided to come up with a simple system to help players of all levels who struggle with good point construction. Not all of us have good natural instincts when it comes to playing points, and at the end of the day, I know that playing good points is a big part of a player becoming the best that they can be. It also helps students progress quickly. After all, we need to know how to use our tools to maximum effect.
Coaches Corner: The Triangle Theory
I remember once seeing a Steffi Graf practice session with her coach. The coach had marked a relatively large triangle in the middle of his side of the court. The idea was for Steffi to hit outside the triangle. Several years later when I was coaching professional players myself, I hated it when players hit short through the middle of the court because it told me that they were playing shots that resembled a “not to lose type of tennis”.
The Wizard Called Woz
It just goes to show there are still different ways to win tennis matches, and grand slams. The offensive counter-punching with interjections of all-court tennis demonstrated by Caroline Wozniacki is proof of this. It’s amazing how successful her relatively simple style of play has been and for so long. For years, we’ve heard that Wozniacki lacks the weaponry and firepower of players such as Serena and Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and others. Well, she has other weapons.
