Letter: Drought's challenges call for cross-state collaboration
To the editor — Thanks for Questen Inghram's highly informative and thorough April 10 article: "What a fourth year of drought means for Yakima Basin farms, fish and drinking water supplies." I respect the work being done in the face of the drought by people focusing on irrigation, fish, municipal water supplies and wildfire. It's impressive to read about folks dealing with the challenging realities intelligently and courageously. Their leadership examples are inspiring.

Islam's Abortion Debate
Islamic jurisprudence does not encourage abortion, but unlike the Catholic Church, it does not absolutely forbid it. Inna Hudaya, founder of Samsara, an information center on abortion in Indonesia. Neighbors think it is some sort of youth activities center. The unmarked modest farmhouse surrounded by lush rice paddies sits in relative isolation along a straight and narrow lane on the outskirts of this Javanese city famed as a center of learning. India and Pakistan are building nuclear-armed submarines
KARACHI, Pakistan — The Karachi Naval Dockyard, home port and strategic nerve center for Pakistan’s fleet, sits on a sliverof land bracketed between Port Grand, a “family fun” pier that features kiddie rides and a panoramic view of warships at anchor, and Machar Colony, a sprawling slum where cattle graze on garbage and a million human inhabitants live in nearly unimaginable squalor.
India and Pakistan Are Quietly Making Nuclear War More Likely
The modern nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed submarine is arguably the most fearsome weapon ever conceived. The US Navy’s 18 Ohio-class boats can each carry 154 nuclear-tipped cruise missiles. They can travel beneath the sea for months, virtually undetectable, and their range is limited only by the crew’s endurance and food supply. When we talk about nuclear submarines, we talk about two different, but related, things: what powers the subs, and what kinds of weapons they carry.
The Pulitzer Center Remembers Journalist Kim Wall
We were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of our colleague and recent grantee Kim Wall, who disappeared Aug. 10 after boarding a miniature submarine in Copenhagen harbor with its builder, Peter Madsen. Madsen, who first told police that he dropped Kim off at a remote location in the harbor, has since said that she died in an unexplained “accident,” and that he buried her at sea. Police have charged Marsden with manslaughter.
The Last Country in the World Where Divorce Is Illegal
MANILA, Philippines — On the occasion of his 84th birthday in 2011, friends of former Filipino Senator Ramon Revilla, a darkly handsome film star turned politician, unveiled an imposing 10-meter-high bronze statue in his honor. Revilla’s films are mostly forgettable and his accomplishments as a lawmaker were marginal, but he will be long remembered in the Philippines for having sired at least 72 children by 16 different women, only one of whom was his wife.

Death Rides a Moto
On a typically steamy afternoon in Phnom Penh, Chhay Hour, a 26-year-old engineer who works for Cambrew, Cambodia’s largest brewery, has been bargaining hard for a used Honda in the capital’s Prampi Makara district, known for its hundreds of used motorcycle shops. This will be his first bike. He used to walk to work from company-provided housing at its main facility near Sihanoukville. Keeping Score on Obama’s State of the Union Address
President Barack Obama spent much of his State of the Union address on Tuesday touting improvements in the United States economy and advocating for new domestic initiatives including free community college and tax cuts for the middle class — ideas that are virtually certain to be dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled Senate and House.
FP’s Handy State of the Union Viewing Guide
As his approval ratings jump to as high as 50 percent thanks to a growing economy and steadily declining unemployment, President Barack Obama is expected to focus heavily on domestic policy in tonight’s State of the Union address rather than foreign policy, where crises around the world have raised doubts about the administration’s capacity for handling challenges ranging from the Islamic State to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.
