Marin Voice: Expense of Prop. 50 special election minimized by Legislature
In the past decade, national partisan political issues have seemingly overshadowed every California issue. Even when California voters (aka California taxpayers) are paying the literal and metaphorical price, the “California story” appears to take second – sometimes third – place to the national partisan story. Sadly, the current fight over Proposition 50 is no different. In the next few weeks, I expect Democrats to make promoting Proposition 50, the ballot proposal in the Nov.
'The independence movement in Scotland is going nowhere'
The independence movement in Scotland is going nowhere. There are at least two different ways to read that sentence. Firstly, that the recent crisis within the SNP has rendered independence a busted flush. Or secondly, that independence, as a mobilising idea, is now so embedded in our politics that it will top the agenda until it happens. These polarised lenses through which Scotland’s politics is perceived are almost part of the dress code for debating any issue.
The Antinomies of Insurgency: The Case of the Scottish National Party
Introduction THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY (SNP) has emerged from the periphery to make a substantial imprint on mainstream British politics. Already the third largest bloc in the House of Commons, polls in early 2023 even suggested the SNP might supplant the Conservative Party as the UK's official parliamentary opposition—an extraordinary prospect for a party competing in less than 10 per cent of UK seats. However, the foundations of that success have crumbled in just a few months.
Marin Voice: In recall election, voters frustrated with Newsom deserve to be heard
It’s real. Sometime this fall, there will be a special election in which the voters will be asked whether they want to “recall” Gov. Gavin Newsom from office. The recall effort qualified for the ballot by gathering more than 1.6 million signatures from registered California voters. The date of the special election has not yet been set and, until a few weeks ago, most people didn’t think it would qualify. In fact, the “recall” seems to have snuck up on both the governor and the media.
Marin Voice: Filibuster is an important tool for minority voices in the Senate
The United States is not a democracy. The United States is a constitutional republic with democratic elements. The fact that we are not a “pure democracy” is not a failure, instead it is a mark of our success as a country. The concept that we are a constitutional republic is intentional. The framers of our Constitution grew up in the age of monarchs.
Marin Voice: We will survive Trump, but maybe not Sacramento Democrats
For all the hand-wringing, angst and dithering as a result of Donald Trump’s victory among Democrats here in Marin and around the country, get over it. It’s not the end of the world. We survived eight years of Barack Obama and we’re all still here. We’ll survive Donald Trump as well. The only ones the Democrats and Hillary Clinton have to blame though for losing is themselves. My theory is that she lost it when she described Trump supporters as deplorable.
