Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
The beginnings of online news back in the early noughties.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yep. My Dad had an electronic typewriter that I would use when I was a child.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It can mean a lot in some fields. In B2B you're not really saving the world, but there are still some thought provoking stories to be told.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Are hashtags funny?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
An email with some good detail is fine enough. I read everything and if it's relevant I will respond.
Who do you wish followed you?
I actually think social media is a blight on modern society and a boon to cultivating narcissistic personality disorders.
Why did you become a journalist?
Always had an inquisitive nature and I actually enjoy the process of writing itself. That and nepotism.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't get into it for the money! But it can be very flexible if you can make it work for you as a freelancer.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mid-morning.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Usually it's just anything that just doesn't have any kind of news worthy angle or hook. Non-stories.
What's your favorite drink?
Whiskey sour if it's a night out, but usually it's a nice coffee to kick off the morning.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Cooking or dreaming of adventures far away.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Edge, Empire and Eurogamer.
