Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2024: Inclusion Benefits Us All
By Tom Wlodkowski NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / June 10, 2024 / At Comcast, we want everyone to get the most out of their connectivity and entertainment experience. But for the disabled community, connectivity can remain a challenge. A study from the Pew Research Center found that disabled Americans are less likely than those without a disability to report using the internet daily (75% vs. 87%).
Recognizing Global Accessibility Awareness Day and Beyond
Each year, Comcast is proud to celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). Founded in 2012, GAAD represents a moment for us all to reflect on the importance of creating equitable and inclusive experiences. We’ve made a lot of progress, which is inspiring, but there are always new technologies on the horizon, like AI for example, that make it exciting to think about future applications. At Comcast, accessibility isn’t an afterthought.
Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2022: The Importance of Innovating for All
Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) was born out of the belief that every user deserves a first-rate digital experience on the web - and that starts with getting more people talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion and the nearly one billion people in the world with disabilities.

Engineering Accessible Experiences from the Ground Up
Our approach to inclusive design is driven by a simple principle: inclusive products deliver a better experience for everyone. We are excited that we now have an opportunity as we build our next-gen entertainment platform, to integrate accessibility as a core component throughout the tech stack. For years, we’ve built our entertainment products like X1 and Flex with accessibility in mind.
Liftoff — Comcast NBCUniversal LIFT Labs
We are looking for startups who can address the following challenge: We believe individuals with disabilities, their loved ones and caregivers, want easy-to-set-up and use tech and adaptive, real-time communication / notifications to stay connected, safe, and informed. We want to work with you to bring solutions for a more connected, empathetic, intuitive world to market.
Comcast and NBC Make The Wiz Live! Available To Visually Impaired With Audio Descriptions
At the end of Citizen Kane, the meaning of "Rosebud" is finally explained to the audience by showing an image of a child’s sled burning in a fire. That climax is heralded as one of the great cinematic reveals in movie history and because it’s told visually, it’s also an ending that would be completely lost on someone like me who was born blind, or anyone else who has a visual disability.
73 Million Examples Why TV Is Now Better for People with Disabilities
I often say that technology can be a great equalizer. And my two decades of experience working on accessibility has taught me that new innovations can really serve to bring all types of people together, especially those with disabilities. This was our vision when we launched the industry's first TV talking guide and after just a few months in the market, the early results are encouraging. In April, the talking guide feature was activated on more than 650,000 X1 boxes nationwide.
Making Products Accessible To All Through The Comcast-TWC Transaction
As someone who was born blind, I know technology can be a great equalizer. And at Comcast, I’m proud to lead the team responsible for exploring how our products and services can open new doors to independence. In fact, I think our industry-leading and sometimes unique focus on accessibility remains one of the overlooked consumer benefits of our pending transaction with Time Warner Cable.
Taking Accessibility Over The Rainbow
What does a person who is blind "see" when they watch The Wizard of Oz™? As someone who was born blind, I always thought of technology as a great equalizer. And when I joined Comcast to focus on product accessibility, I was excited to explore how our services could open new doors to independence.
The Power of TV is Universal
As a kid, I was born blind but that didn’t stop me from watching my favorite shows after school. I’d memorize channel numbers, recognize the announcer’s voice for a Red Sox broadcast, or listen for the iconic opening notes of the M.A.S.H. theme song. Today, the TV viewer has more options than ever: hundreds of channels, dozens of settings and an overflowing menu of content to choose from.
Making Our Products Even more Accessible
When we’re developing products, it’s important that we get input from customers. This is especially important when we’re working to make products more accessible to customers with disabilities. My team’s goal is to get input early and often, so we can incorporate customer feedback throughout the process. This fall, we hosted a series of roundtable discussions with organizations representing the deaf and hard of hearing community and the blind and low vision community (the full list is below).
