In a statement released by the breakaway league on Wednesday, Scott O'Neil, the chief executive, said there was a “signed agreement in place with a lead investor” which had been approved by the board of directors. The statement added that they expected terms to be finalised “in the coming weeks, with the goal of entering a transaction in September”.

The British America's Cup sailor inspired by her SAS soldier dad
Women have not always been welcomed with open arms at the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS). The Cowes-based yacht club dates back to 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo, but only voted to allow female members in 2013. The men-only policy has led to some awkward moments down the years. When Queen Victoria, who had a holiday home in nearby Osborne House, expressed a desire to watch the squadron's annual regatta from the Castle, where the clubhouse is based, the members did not know what to do.

Tadej Pogacar has joined cycling's immortals and revives its oldest questions
In the end, Tadej Pogacar was unable to claim his sixth stage win of this year's race on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday evening. Even the man described by Britain's Fred Wright (Pinarello–Q36.5) as an “alien” had to bow down to the power of Mathieu van der Poel in what proved to be a sensational finale. But boy, did Pogacar leave his mark on this race once again.

Geraint Thomas faces uphill task as Ineos' struggles continue at Tour de France
It was, as Netcompany-Ineos said themselves on X after the stage, a valiant effort. Having been away all day in various groups, Josh Tarling, the 22-year-old Welshman who went so close to winning an Olympic medal in Paris in 2024, attacked under the flamme rouge, with one kilometre remaining of stage 17 of the Tour de France from Chambéry to Voiron. Alas, his efforts were in vain. Tarling was caught within a few hundred metres, acting thereafter as a glorified lead-out for the sprint teams.

So what is better for a New Zealander to win? A World Cup with the All Blacks or an Open Championship on your own? That was the question for the Fox family to wrestle with on Sunday evening after Ryan became the first Kiwi to lift the Claret Jug in 63 years. But what an imponderable to have as they popped open the champagne. Not a Haka or hacker in sight.

McIlroy and DeChambeau deliver fireworks if not the golf
The 154th Open Championship will not go down as a classic. It produced some wonderful drama at the very end, and a thoroughly deserving champion in Ryan Fox , who converted his opportunity on the final hole in a manner of which his father, the former All Blacks fly-half Grant Fox, would have been proud. But it took a while to get there.
