From grieving to renewal
The Center for Literary Publishing (2023, 85 pp.) “The darker/life becomes the more you/find forms/of silence/you never/before knew existed.” Brace yourself when you embark on this stunningly stark work of poems by Tommy Archuleta, a mental health counselor for the New Mexico Corrections Department. Spells and prayers can’t keep the dead from walking at night, and wherever you go the spirit of the deceased loved one wafts and looms. Grieving for a mother shades these delicate lyrical etchings.
Ancestry by Tommy Archuleta - Poems
There are too many ancestors, so we are gathering their bones. The poor ones, their graves broken by the roots of trees. The ones whose headstones have been weathered as blank as snow-drifts. The one buried with his medals.

Instead, they inspirit every element of the external world (the wolf, the chokecherry tree, the window, the moth, the rose) and enfever the body, the mind, the dream, and the nightmare. The dead, here, are relentlessly unsentimental.

Remedio : Ocotillo (Candlewood) by Tommy Archuleta - Poems | Academy of American Poets
for Maria Jesus Martinez You were laid among lilies, the thin skin of the leaf, the interval, oak pews bowing beneath the weight. If a stone were cast, your mouth would be the well anchoring the water's wish. And the word you would speak in that incommensurable depth could unlock space with a paper key.
