Penn volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley is leaving the program after just one season
Penn volleyball had one head coach for 19 years, but will open the 2018 campaign with its third coach in three seasons. After just one season at the helm of the Red and Blue, coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley is leaving the program to take an assistant coaching job with perennial powerhouse Penn State, sources told the Daily Pennsylvanian. The highly popular Schumacher-Cawley, who was hired in February 2017, told the team about her departure in a meeting on Thursday morning.
Penn men's basketball finds itself ranked high, far ahead of Ivy foes in latest RPI update
Conference play hasn't yet tipped off, but by at least one measure the Quakers are off to a promising start in their quest for an Ivy League triumph. Penn men's basketball sits at No. 92 in the latest national Rating Percentage Index (RPI) rankings, which came out on Monday. RPI seeks to compare the nation's many teams by taking into account the massive variety in strength of schedule when looking at wins and losses.
Swamis Week 10: #LastOneFastOne
There's a sad(!) sort of clanging from the clock in the hall, and the bells in the steeple too. And up in the DP office our absurd President Carter is popping out to say cuck-oo. I'm not going to take shots at Carter though. Even though he took shots at me earlier today.
Jack Soslow and Jay Cammon, Jr. rack up Ivy League Player of the Week awards for Penn football
With the way things played out during Penn football's 23-6 win over Harvard this past weekend, it's no surprise that some hardware is headed the Quakers' way. And it's even less surprising that Penn's two award winners did their work on defense and special teams. Senior kicker Jack Soslow drilled three field goals, including a 40-yarder, and helped shut down the return game to earn Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week.
Penn volleyball swept in road doubleheader as season comes to a bittersweet end
The next time Penn volleyball takes the court, things will look quite different. The Quakers finished their season with a pair of losses on the road this past weekend, falling in straight sets to Dartmouth (10-13, 6-8 Ivy) and losing 3-1 to Harvard (13-10, 8-6). For Penn (12-11, 7-7), the weekend sweep spelled an unpleasant end to an otherwise respectable season, as the Red and Blue finished over .500 for the first time since 2013.
Lauren Whitlatch eager to return to Penn women's basketball after tearing ACL last season
After a breakout sophomore season in 2015-16 that saw her become a key piece of the Quakers' starting lineup, Lauren Whitlatch entered her junior season expecting to be a key piece for a Penn women's basketball team which hadn't lost a single rotation member to graduation the year before. But the Quakers' plan of having the same starting lineup for two seasons straight was derailed in January, when Whitlatch tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in practice.
Swamis Week Nine: We're still here, dog
[DISCLAIMER: Swamis is a Daily Pennsylvanian tradition in which select members make jokes and predict the results of Ivy League football games. You may not find it funny, but that’s your fault for looking. Enjoy! -Will Snow, Senior Sports Editor] Today is pretty much all about our wonderful Penn Basketball preview, but we barely squeezed in Swamis. And I mean barely. William left it off the story list. But like a phoenix, Swamis rose from the ashes, so here we are.
SWAMIS Week Eight: Puck Frinceton!
Beliee it or not, the Quakers aren't out of it yet. Of course, Penn football's title hopes are less than spirit, less than the meanest ghost... but still, they are alive. Seriously! Did you know that Penn football, in the midst of such an awful season, could still get its name on the Ivy League trophy? Yes, that's right. Penn could win as much as one-fourth of the league title, if half the teams (one of them being Penn) go 4-3 with the other half going 3-4.
Caroline Furrer thriving for Penn volleyball after switch to libero
Caroline Furrer burst onto the scene for Penn volleyball in 2016, racking up a whopping 226 kills to finish as the second-highest scorer on the team in her first collegiate season. But with just four games left in the 2017 season, Furrer has tallied just five kills in her sophomore campaign. And yet, if you ask anyone on the team, they'll tell you "Red" is playing better than ever.
SWAMIS Week Seven: It's the Toilet Bowl, Charlie Brown!
As in, "Boo! Scared you!" Because it's Halloween, and SWAMIS are accordingly spooky. NOT a disgruntled "booooo" because Penn is winless in Ivy League play after allegedly winning two championships in a row... although that's not exactly worth a "hurrah." I'm not disgruntled. Losing happens. But I wouldn't call myself gruntled, either. And if Penn loses the Toilet Bowl this week, I'll definitely be disgruntled. That's right, Saturday will bring the matchup we've all been waiting for, Penn vs. Brown.
In a season full of highlights, which moments stand out thus far?
Throughout the fall season, there have been spectacular individual and team performances for Penn Athletics. Our editors debate which moment sticks out most to them. Watch this highlight reel goal, and you shouldn’t need anymore convincing than that. But, just in case, I’ll add a bit of context. At home, against one of the best field hockey programs in the country, Hoover’s dizzying, circus shot goal proved to be the game winner.
SWAMIS Week Six: Penn football needs a "Dubya"
There's an old saying in Pennsylvania— I know it's in Texas, probably in Pennsylvania— that says, "Fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me--- you can't get fooled again." Now, I want to thank the Quakers for their service. I appreciate the fact that they really snatched defeat out of the jaws of those who were trying to defeat us in New York. But I won't get fooled again. Rarely is the question asked, "Is our children learning?" Well, THIS writer has learned.
SWAMIS Week Five: It's a Trap Game!
Reader, have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Bagnoli the Wise? I thought not. It's not a story ACOMM would tell you. Darth Bagnoli was a coach so powerful he could control the athletic, academic and social lives of his student-athletes. He had such a knowledge of the NCAA eligibility rules that he could even keep the ones he coached from profiting off of their own talents and labor. The NCAA is a pathway to many wage labor systems some consider to be unnatural. What happened to Darth Bagnoli?
Halfway through the fall season, who is Penn Athletics' MVP?
As we hit the midpoint of the semester, all of Penn Athletics' fall teams now have their seasons well underway. Many players have stood out with strong starts to their campaigns, but who has been the MVP thus far? Our editors tackle the question below. No discussion of Penn Athletics’ fall sports standouts could possibly be complete without the mention of Penn sprint football’s Eddie Jenkins. The sophomore quarterback is truly a jack of all trades for one of Penn’s most competitive teams.
Meet the Super Seniors: Penn volleyball's veterans make the most of their time running the show
In college athletics, every new season brings plenty of new faces and, more painfully, a host of goodbyes. But this was not the case last season for one Penn team, a rarity which will make the end of this season all the more bittersweet. The Penn volleyball class of 2017 was a complete non-factor on and off the court. This is not an attack on their playing ability or leadership qualities, but merely a consequence of the fact that they did not exist.
SWAMIS Week Three: A clean slate in the empty void
"This generation's closest thing to Einstein, so don't worry about me, I'm fine." In hindsight, Kanye probably lied with that lyric. But he's not the only liar. "Read my lips: no new taxes." "I am not a crook." "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." "Please accept this offering of a giant wooden horse with no ulterior motive behind it." "Lehigh 35, Penn 21." Did I lie to you all last week, when I went against my 15 fellow Swamis and said Penn would lose?
Penn volleyball finishes preseason with strong showing at Robert Morris Invitational
Preseason games don't count for the Ivy League standings at the end of the year, but the Quakers are confident that their momentum will prove to be very real. Penn volleyball won two out of three this past weekend at the Robert Morris Invitational, bouncing back from a tough loss against Rutgers with wins against Robert Morris and Middle Tennessee State. "I think it was a great tournament," coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "We got better with every match." Indeed they did.
Swamis 2017 Week 1: The "who's whom'st've" of your new soothsayers
Hey everybody! It's Tommy, your favorite "Senior comma Sports Editor," here. My unpunctuated predecessor once asked a question that began with "who here is" and, while I must make some slight alterations, it does seem prudent to ask and answer, "who here is who?" That's right, people. Swamis is slowly becoming a listicle. Swamis is now online. And next week, Swamis just might have stories. But that decision will be up to WILL SNOW, our "Senior (no comma) Sports Editor" and your first Swami.
Penn softball coach Leslie King inducted into Softball New Zealand Hall of Fame
While many Penn students were "dartying" over Labor Day weekend, one member of the Red and Blue family was accomplishing something far more memorable. Penn softball coach Leslie King spent the weekend across the Pacific Ocean in Wellington, New Zealand, where she was inducted into the Softball New Zealand Hall of Fame on September 2. King, who has been the Quakers' head coach since 2004, starred for New Zealand's national team over a 14-year period.
Here's what's happening this weekend in Penn Athletics
DP Sports released its Soccer Issue on Thursday, previewing the season ahead and the matchups on tap this weekend. But what about the rest of Penn Athletics? Here's what the other squads who don the Red and Blue will be up to over the next few days: Penn volleyball will be looking to build on a strong start last weekend in Virginia, and this weekend they'll be playing in more familiar territory.
DP Sports' Player of the Week: Parker Jones
Well, that didn't take long. After lighting up the box score in her first three matches as a member of Penn volleyball, freshman outside hitter Parker Jones is our first Player of the Week for the new school year. The Quakers went 2-1 on their season-opening trip to Virginia, dropping their opening matchup in five sets against Campbell before bouncing back with a pair of wins in the form of a four-set victory over Central Michigan and a clean sweep of George Mason.
SWAMIS Week Two: Tough sledding
Hey football fans, it's Tommy here again. We were gonna have Will Snow write this week's Swami blurb as the football squad heads into week two, but we figured Penn would be upset if we let that much alcohol anywhere near our football coverage. See, the good ol' lad, young Willie Bear, the Junior Comma Sports Editor, pride of Nashville, Tennessee, most-blessed-and-best-dressed, turns 21 today. And so if you find any typos in today's paper, it's because we sent after midnight.
Which Penn Athletics team has the best title odds this fall?
With fall athletics underway, many Penn teams will be vying for Ivy League and even national glory. Which team has the best chances of claiming or defending a trophy? Three of the Daily Pennsylvanian sports editors talked it out. Which autumn squad is the most likely to win a title this year? The team that already has five-sixths of one, obviously.
Yoan Moncada Cleared To Sign With Any MLB Team
Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com is reporting that the agent for Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada, received the necessary notification from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Friday night stating that his player is now an unblocked national. In other words, this now clears the way for Moncada to sign with any MLB team of his choosing.
Jose Iglesias Could Give Mets Some Defense and Speed
The Mets shortstop trade rumors have been endless this offseason. The Troy Tulowitzki rumors went from being reported that there were rigorous talks occurring for weeks, to learning there was never any extensive talks at all. At this point in the offseason, all signs point to Wilmer Flores beginning the season as our everyday shortstop. Best-case scenario, with him, you’re looking at average defense with solid offense.
Fred Wilpon Named Chairman of MLB Finance Committee
If any of you were hanging onto a slim hope that new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred would somehow be the antithesis to Bud Selig who turned a blind eye as Mets owner Fred Wilpon skirted the rules and nearly bankrupted a big market franchise, think again. Bill Madden of the Daily News reports there was a lot more happening at last week’s owners meeting in Arizona than just a farewell party for Bud Selig.
