Liverpool's 1983-87 socialist council
Following the Grenfell Tower fire disaster, columnist Simon Jenkins in the Guardian attacked the policy of building residential tower blocks. In the article he says: "When in the 1980s Liverpool's Militant movement asked Everton's inhabitants what should be done with their towers, the reply was pull them down and give us back the streets.
Housing: Irresponsibility becomes reality
'Councils will be ordered to build thousands more homes' is the message. I immediately thought I'd missed the election of a Corbyn-led government that was implementing a basic socialist policy. No. It came from Sajid David, one of the more myopic ministers in a government whose eyes are fixed rigidly on the bottom line and whose hostility to council housing is only exceeded by hostility to trade unions.
Response to Derek Hatton's criticism of Corbyn over Brexit vote
Derek Hatton's criticism of Jeremy Corbyn's proposed support for triggering Brexit is off the mark (FT 1/2/17). Corbyn is reflecting the majority 'Out' vote which I supported on the basis that the EU is a pro-capitalist, pro-austerity institution. Derek will remember that we campaigned for a socialist Brexit because EU directives opposed public ownership and enshrined privatisation. I remain implacably opposed to May's 'red, white and blue Brexit' as an attempt to offer more of the same.

John Hoggart believes Liverpool's Militant-led socialist council left a disastrous legacy and Thatcher had us on a string (Letters, 15 August). Is that why the Iron Lady conceded millions to the city - the only one to gain anything from that government? Is that why Liverpool became the object of a hysterical hate campaign, similar to the current anti-Corbyn campaign, against a single city by the forces of the establishment, with Murdoch's Sun, Maxwell and Kinnock spearheading the poisonous attack?
