Tonya Pendleton is a veteran multimedia journalist and cultural commentator, known as the engaging host of Philadelphia’s WURD Radio talk program "Reality Check." Since her debut in 2023, she has led insightful discussions on politics, social issues, sports, health and arts & culture. In April 2024, she moderated a student-loan debt roundtable hosted by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris – immediately followed by a one-on-one interview with Harris. During her tenure at WURD, she’s also hosted more than 30 live broadcasts, including ones for the Museum of the American Revolution, World Heritage Day, Jackie Robinson Day, Juneteenth, The National Convening of Black Mayors and Black Business Expo, and the Black Farmers Conference, among others. She is also the voice and producer of "Things To Do", a weekend entertainment guide on NPR affiliate WHYY, a role she’s held for more than seven years. As a contributor to Cassiuslife.com, she regularly pens lively cultural essays and interviews for the hip-hop–influenced digital magazine.
Pendleton has held other prominent editorial roles in media. She was the founding music editor (and later managing editor) of BET.com and served as lead interviewer on AOL’s pioneering "Sessions@AOL" music series. Her reporting and commentary have appeared in outlets ranging from Slam magazine and ESPN to Nike’s Brand Jordan magazine, and she has been featured as a cultural expert on VH-1’s historic "Ultimate Albums" and "Behind the Music" shows. She's hosted and moderated panels including WURD’s Audio Creators event and Polished Solid’s series of Prince symposiums. Renowned for her vivid storytelling, Pendleton has snowboarded with rapper Ja Rule and sung backup for Will Smith. She even traveled to Prince’s famed Paisley Park studio for a rare one-on-one interview.
