Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Commerical radio reporter: 6PR in Perth, Western Australia

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Oh yeah.

How is social media changing news?

Faster, non-stop, more data ... but that means the conflict between accuracy and speediness is out there for the public to see.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Looking beyond the white noise & chatter to find out what is really going on. Conveying accurate, relevant information to wider audiences.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

ENPS; FCP: Adobe Premier; Photoshop; Twitter; Facebook ... pretty much anything goes.

What's your favorite social network?

Would be unfair to pick just one ...

Who do you wish followed you?

Other journalists

Why did you become a journalist?

Genetics + a desire to travel the world, tell stories, understand different people ....

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No - my high school was too small. But, at the same time my Dad ran our town newspaper out of our house, and I helped out - does that count?

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Many over the years. From 9/11 families to numerous Mid East peace talks _ I enjoy the variety that comes with working in a news agency.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be determined, passionate and creative. The industry is morphing, into what? But there is still a demand for good, accurate stories.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime, via email.
