Hugs from the Afterlife
My mother, Elaine, died recently. Like a lighthouse on a rock, she withstood every tempestuous wave life threw at her. I loved - and took for granted - her matter-of-fact optimism. I wrote about Elaine's extraordinary experience – reunited with her teenage savior seven decades after a near-drowning incident that shaped our family tree in Reign 16 Secrets. When she was five and holidaying with her family along South Africa’s Garden Route on The Wilderness beach, she ran into the water.

I’d come to Vietnam to hang out with my husband on contract in Halong Bay, 170 kms east of Hanoi. Due to work commitments, he couldn’t fetch me from the airport so he’d sent a limousine from the Sofitel Metropole. The uniformed chauffeur called Tongue held up a placard with Mrs Munch written on it in large letters. Tongue is not how he spells it but then my name’s not Mrs Munch either. Whatever. Spelling is the last thing you need to worry about in Vietnam. Staying alive is of far greater concern.
Doing it for the Kids!
The KCAs celebrated 25 years of SpongeBob SquarePants with an awards ceremony featuring high-tech motion graphics, signature orange blimp awards, screaming kids, glittering celebrities — and plenty of green slime, a tradition which is hilarious to watch, but definitely to be avoided if you’re wearing an expensive designer dress! Chicama, north Peru, surfing nirvana. The longest ‘left’ wave on the planet. Up to 2.2km, on the rare occasions when the gods oblige and stars absolutely align. Set just beyond the southern fringe of scrubby little dust town Puerto Malabrigo (pop. 5,000), at the edge of what seems a never-ending ugly, stony desert. A fleet of big, ocean-going fishing trawlers anchors off a long, spindly tressle-dock. Smoke belches 24/7 from 10 processing plants set at the northern, rough end of town.

The Peruvian desert, which includes most of the nation’s western flank between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, is not exceptionally wide, between 100km and 200km. Applegate LLC’s new Cheat Sheets help travelers by scrapping the tired old phrasebook formula and replacing it with a simple glossary form. “With old-fashioned phrasebooks, whatever word or phrase you need to look up, you have to start by guessing which chapter it’s buried in,” says editor and designer John Boykin. “For example, is Bicycle under Activities, Recreation, or Transportation? How’s the writing going? How often have you felt like chucking it in the bucket? A Survival Guide
Some of my worst ratings have come from gold medalists in grudge-holding. It’s personal. They’ll hide behind another name, but it’s not hard to figure out when you see the reviewer has one Facebook friend in common with you. Guess who! You might mull over their motives. You weren’t fast enough to their sickbed or delivered snacks expressly forbidden in a WhatsApp message you weren’t privy to. They took umbrage to your “terfing” because their lantern-jawed lad with the ski feet is transitioning.

Using online dating to meet people from other countries
It’s a great way to get matches https://amigoz-tattoo.co.il/latina-america-marriage-traditions/ who share your interests and values, which is why online dating has grown in popularity. There are a few things to remember, though. For starters, online dating is n’t a substitute for face-to-face interactions. Inzolo Lodge at Lalibela
In October last year, Lalibela Game Reserve experienced a massive downpour that ended an almost seven-year drought in the region, flooding rivers and washing away the roads offering accessibility to Inzolo Lodge. Its distinctive hillside location made it impossible for the Lalibela team to use alternative routes to get guests to and from the lodge. Inzolo had to be closed until repairs could be carried out.
Red Carpets and Reunions
2024 kicked off with a bang, with the Hollywood awards season…and lots of travel – officially underway. The 81st Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, was tremendously successful. The red carpet and ceremony had every major film and television star in attendance. After the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that crippled Tinseltown for almost the whole of last year, celebs were genuinely delighted to see friends and colleagues that they hadn’t seen in forever.
Bundling into the New Year
Caroline here, wishing you everything your heart desires in 2024. I intend to welcome the New Year like I did the last one – dodging beery lips or resolution roulette – chilling at home doing whatever I like. Writing a quick newsletter was not high on my list of priorities. Then, I remembered somebody preordered The Writer’s Toolkit, expecting it to drop onto their Kindle or smartphone on Monday. Does Amazon let customers who preorder something know if the title got unpublished and archived?
Rebel Moon in Hollywood
I was particularly excited to attend the premiere, as all the main actors flew in from all over the world to show support – after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strikes and the beginning of film premieres again like it used to be. Fans were equally ecstatic – happy to finally see their favorite stars back in action promoting their films. Actor Greg Kriek, who plays Marcus in ‘Rebel Moon’, brings a taste of South Africa to the movie.
Siya Kolisi in the Big Apple
It’s not exactly every day that South African rugby icon Siya Kolisi pops into my neck of the woods, so I hopped on an Amtrak and made my way over to the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame for the Kolisi Foundation’s first fundraiser in the Big Apple. The 32-year-old Springbok captain from Zwide in the Eastern Cape made history by leading South Africa to a second consecutive Rugby World Cup last month, with SA winning four overall.
36 Hours in Nashville

Boks to Basquiat
My first stop was to chat with Saffas In NYC (South Africans in New York City) founder Mosito Ramaili about their official Rugby World Cup watch party over the weekend in Brooklyn – which saw a record turnout of South Africans all over New York and surrounding areas watch the Springboks historic win over the New Zealand All Blacks! Gardening Books - TravelWrite
Companion Planting Gardening Guide for Beginners by Ninon McKeon What a hoot of a read! Ninon McKeon’s book on companion planting is a prize-winner as he takes us through the quirks of plant relationships with a delightful touch of humor. Who would’ve thought that sunflowers and corn make terrible neighbors? Not only do sunflowers gobble up resources, stifling smaller plants, but they’re also guilty of releasing toxic chemicals that throw potato growth off balance.
L.A. with the Stars
For us mere mortals, it’s nice when you’re with a friend with a curling iron you can borrow. Or wants to go grab a mani-pedi. So we decided to jet over to LA and “live like a star” for a week. We started off with a first-class flight on American Airlines. First class is convenient when you’ve got a lot of luggage – my son moved to LA, so I had to carry all his stuff with me and at least made use of my luggage allowance.
Flight To Fashion
So any break I can get, to just sit back, relax, and chill – is golden. The 6-foot (183 cm) fully flat bed with bedding on British Airways Club World was just what I needed. I prepped my skin with the provided amenities kit and facial moisturizer from The White Company and had a light appetizer of shrimp and tomatoes with cilantro and a glass of champagne. It was time to put on my noise-canceling headphones to sleep for the rest of the 8-hour flight.
Bridging Nations
Tower Bridge, London: It’s recognizable silhouette has been used in countless movies to show viewers where the story is taking them. Its position in Southwark has probably seen bridges across the Thames River since Roman times. An architectural and engineering marvel when it was opened in 1831, it was painstakingly rebuilt between 1968 and 1972. The bridge is famously sturdy, with granite cladding over a steel frame.
