Tommy John, whose major league career was extended after he became the first player to undergo the elbow surgery that now carries his name, has died. He was 83. He had been in hospice care at his home in Bradenton, Fla. The left-handed pitcher spent 26 seasons in the majors and won 288 games — 164 of which came after his elbow was famously repaired. Only scandal-plagued Roger Clemens has more career victories in the Modern Era and isn’t in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Published Tommy John, the MLB icon whose groundbreaking comeback helped give his name to one of baseball's most famous surgeries, has died at 83. John passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, surrounded by his wife, Cheryl, and family, according to a statement released by his agent, Mike Maguire. The most unfortunate thing
By Jason Arday’s own account, he experienced a lot of bad luck in his life. He had tumours (in his brain, according to his memoir Great and Unfortunate Things, which I reviewed for The Times; one in his testicle, according to the proposal for that book). He was randomly beaten up by four youths, leaving him with epilepsy (I could find no contemporary reports to corroborate this). He was hit by a car, and comatose for months (another story that was in the proposal but not the final text).

The comic book adventure, starring Tom Holland as Marvel‘s neighborhood web-slinger, has grossed $785 million in North America and $1.23 billion overseas for a grand total of $2.022 billion.

Most Americans believe a free market system is a good thing. Americans are net-negative on socialism. Capitalism is better-liked. But those ideas aside, right now they say it's harder now to do things like buy a house, raise a family, and to just feel financially secure than for the last generation. Younger people are especially apt to feel opportunities are fewer. So most also call the current U.S. economic system unfair, in terms of the way it works for chances to get ahead.
