Montauk Lighthouse is a fun place to visit
The Montauk Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark that was built in 1796. Did you know that President George Washington authorized that the lighthouse be built? The lighthouse was built to help ships spot land and warn them of danger. It’s the first lighthouse in New York State, and the fourth oldest lighthouse in the United States. There are 137 iron steps to the top of the tower. The light flashes can be seen for 19 nautical miles.
Our secret playground
When you think of a swamp, what do you think of? Is it a disgusting, murky place that’s spooky? Or is it a place of adventure? We have a swamp that connects our backyards. A lot of people come to Montauk for a scenic vacation, but we like it because we have a secret getaway. Our swamp is a wetland. On days when there is nothing to do, we love to explore the swamp. We have found dead trees knocked over and mounds of dirt that we climb on. We have spotted wildlife like deer, snakes and frogs.
Chelsea Clinton talks with Long Island kids
We met author Chelsea Clinton when she was doing a book signing for her latest book: “She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World” (Philomel Books). She talked to us about being the daughter of the president of the United States and about her mom, Hillary Clinton, who served as secretary of state. She also talked us about her two children, Charlotte and Aidan. We were at the Barnes & Noble store in Union Square. Do you have a favorite between your two new books?
