Trey Barrineau’s Biography

Trey Barrineau is an experienced editor and writer in the Washington, D.C., area. His work has appeared in USA TODAY and elsewhere, and it's been highlighted by The Atlantic, Slate, Yale Environment 360, and other publications.

Trey is an editor at AARP, where he works on content for AARP.org's Members Edition. He started there in June 2024.

From August 2023 to May 2024, Trey was a research editor with the Institute for Justice (IJ), a nonprofit, public interest law firm that frequently argues cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He helped edit, produce, promote, and distribute IJ’s social science and policy research reports. These are written for a broad audience that includes journalists, policy advocates, legislators, judges, academics, and the general public. Trey joined IJ in August 2023.

From August 2018 to August 2023, Trey was the managing editor at NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association. He oversaw all aspects of editing and production for Development magazine, and he also wrote articles and blog posts as needed. During his time there, Development won 23 global, national, and regional awards for editorial excellence, and in 2021, the publication was a finalist for Magazine of the Year in the American Society of Business Publication Editors' Azbee Awards of Excellence.

From December 2014 to August 2018, Trey was with Key Media & Research. He wrote and edited a wide range of content as the editor of Door and Window Market (DWM) magazine, curated and produced a daily e-mail newsletter for industry stakeholders, managed the publication's social media accounts, and made frequent appearances in video newscasts. While there, DWM won six national and regional awards for editorial excellence, and Slate praised the magazine in a November 2016 article about trade publications.

And from September 2000 to December 2014, Trey was a multiplatform editor at USA TODAY. In that role, he edited a broad array of digital and print content, from the iconic national daily newspaper to specialty publications. he also wrote blog entries and stories, managed the Life website's presentation on mobile and desktop platforms, and created posts for USA TODAY's branded social media accounts. During his time there, Trey won several awards for outstanding headlines.
