What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job was with a healthcare news outlet, writing about the latest developments in the field.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yep! But never professionally.
How is social media changing news?
Social media has unlocked the 24-hour news cycle, which keeps readers informed at all times, but has also made them weary.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It is to take stock of all the facts, toe the thin line between all views--but still being brave enough to stand for what is right.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Mostly just word and whatever productivity tool my client uses. I'd like to get to know how to use AI in my work. Ethically, of course.
What's your favorite social network?
None, if I could choose to live away from the internet. But if forced to choose... Tiktok, I'd say.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A story about a giant bat cave in southern Philippines and the struggle to keep a big conservation effort afloat when no one seems to care
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
If you're from the Philippines like me, broaden your horizons. The local scene is very exclusionary and honestly a bit suffocating.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At the gym!
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's not for everyone. False: Everyone needs to know what's going on in biotech so we know what treatments are available and upcoming.
