Sir David Attenborough Predicts the ‘Collapse of Civilization’ at UN Climate Summit
You're probably used to hearing Sir David Attenborough's sonorous, British voice describe the miracles of pufferfish courtship and blooming stink flowers in nature documentaries like "Planet Earth" and "Blue Planet." But today (Dec. 3), the naturalist and filmmaker delivered a far more somber monologue at the United Nations Climate Summit in Katowice, Poland. "Right now, we're facing a man-made disaster of global scale," Attenborough told delegates from almost 200 nations.
Earth needs climate 'reality check', space pioneer warns
Katowice (Poland) (AFP) - The world needs a "reality check" on the threat posed by climate change, NASA astronaut Mae Jemison said Tuesday at a UN summit to chart mankind's path away from runaway global warming. Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, brought a little galactic perspective to the COP24 talks in Poland, calling on delegates from nearly 200 countries to tackle "the most difficult problem we've ever faced." "When people say save the Earth, they are mistaken.
'Cheating' gorillas show clever puzzle-solving
By Matthew Stock BRISTOL, England (Reuters) - Gorillas at a zoo in England have demonstrated a distinctly human trait while attempting to solve a new puzzle game - cheating. The gorillas were presented with a wall-mounted device where the aim is to guide a peanut through a series of obstacles by poking a stick through various holes to move it along. Eventually the peanut reaches the bottom of the device and drops out. Some gorillas, however, figured out an easier way to retrieve the nut.

Now he is among millions upon millions of Indians using air conditioning -- helping make the world hotter still. With India's AC market expected to explode from 30 million to a billion units by 2050, the world's second-most populous country could become the planet's top user of electricity for cooling.
Mesmerizing video shows what would happen if an asteroid crashed into Earth's oceans
In films like Armageddon, Hollywood has valiantly tried (and failed) to take on the question of what would happen if a comet or asteroid plunged into the oceans on Earth, but what has scientific research actually determined it may look like? America's National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has posted a new video illustrating what could happen if an asteroid crashed into one of our oceans, and it's fascinating.
Watch a Brainless, Single-Cell Slime Hunt for Food in This Eerie GIF
VIDEO A creepy video that's gotten new life as a GIF shows a slime mold on the hunt. The slime mold, a species called Physarum polycephalum, is not actually a mold at all; it's a single-celled protist. These giant cells can grow to square meters in area, though most are a few square centimeters or inches instead.
Egypt's mass verdicts show pressure on judiciary
CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's judiciary is rife with judges who are sharp opponents of Islamists, and they are operating amid a media frenzy demanding swift and harsh verdicts against the Muslim Brotherhood. The result, judicial experts say, is this week's stunning verdict sentencing hundreds of suspected Islamists to death after a cursory mass trial, a decision likely to be overturned but clearly intended to send a deterrent message.
Disappearing Arctic sea ice threatens Canada's polar bears: expert panel
Ottawa (AFP) - A committee of wildlife experts warned Monday that Canada's largest land predator, the polar bear, was at risk of disappearing from its vast Arctic landscape as melting Arctic sea ice makes hunting prey a challenge. "It is clear we will need to keep a close eye on this species," Graham Forbes, co-chair of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) said in a statement.
