Spacemoth Special Guest Segment along with bites of punk, psych-funk, new indie releases
Tyler "Boogie" Boudreaux Part wax. Part digital. Pure heat. Part wax. Part digital. Pure heat. On this week's journey, Tyler steers us through waves of screaming guitars. After nights of diving into the deep abyss of Black Flag lore, she shares a classic punk ripper from their 1981 record Damaged, balanced with a taste of the Gravest Gravy, the newly unearthed recordings from 1977 when The Cramps traveled to Memphis to record with Alex Chilton.

Chasing the Watermelon Man: An Audio Folk Story
In the summer of 2023, the jazz-funk groove of Herbie Hancock's 1973 recording of "Watermelon Man" bounced into my ears and fixed itself on a loop. And it's actually a reimagination of Herbie's original version, a hard bop standard from 1962 which you may recognize: Both versions of "Watermelon Man" are highly influential jazz recordings, and they sent ripples of change throughout American music in the 20th century.
The abolitionist history of the Black Republican Cherry
The local farmers market Santa Monica, California It’s late Spring in Santa Monica, and that means it’s cherry season at the farmers’ market. Whether you like a dark red Brooks or the bright pop of an Early Glen, they’re all here. Cherry lover Mitchell Kraus has been coming to the Santa Monica Farmers Market for “at least a couple of decades.” “I harass all the farmers every year: ‘Where are my cherries, where are my cherries, where are my cherries?’ all year long,” he says.

The Urgency of Black Lives Matter’s #BlackXmas in the Midst of Pandemic
Published on Thursday, 26 November 2020 01:06 Written by Melina Abdullah and Tyler Boudreaux November 26, 2020 By Melina Abdullah and Tyler Boudreaux Special to LAWT 2020 is a year that the world has cracked wide open. As the Spirits of #AhmaudArbery, #BreonnaTaylor, and #GeorgeFloyd resonated globally, they were met by the spiritual energy of #DijonKizzee, #FrederickWilliams, and dozens of others whose lives were stolen by police violence right here in Los Angeles.
KCRW's March Volunteer of the Month
Meet Jeremy! Whether he's out at a KCRW Presents show hanging up posters in an ankle boot or behind the street team table sharing his excitement for KCRW with the community, Jeremy exemplifies the spirit of volunteership. He quickly stood out for his quick-learner sensibilities and willingness to help with whatever job needed to be done. Every task he's assigned, he completes with all of his heart, soul & might.
Your ‘90s t-shirts are now “vintage,” and other takeaways from ThriftCon LA
Everything old is new again, and that’s literally the case with used clothing, a hot look among LA fashionistas right now. Even Vogue predicted for this year, “The Future of Fashion Is Circular: Why the 2020s Will Be About Making New Clothes Out of Old Ones.” So what’s fueling the taste for old clothes? And what qualifies as “vintage”? No, it’s not those nipped-waisted frocks worn by Marvelous Mrs Maisel. KCRW’s Tyler Boudreaux is our resident fashionista and thrifting fanatic.
KCRW's December Volunteer of the Month
As 2019 comes to an end, and I reflect on all of the outstanding volunteers and interns I've met throughout the year, one former Summer Marketing Intern comes to mind as someone who left a positive impression on me. Meet Paul! For any event he signed up for, Paul was always the first one to show up, and the last to leave at every event no matter what.
Summer Nights on 35mm
This summer, a group of KCRW marketing interns pointed their analogue camera lenses and captured moments from our Summer Nights series on 35mm film. The rolls have now been developed, bringing grainy textures and saturated hues to the surface of glowing faces and spectacular landscapes. From Old Town Pasadena to Santa Barbara to Chinatown, these 24 exposures depict the range of smiles, dances, colors and shapes that make up the many sensations of a free summertime outdoor music event.
KCRW's September Volunteer of the Month
Meet Niko van Eimeren! She first made her way to interning with KCRW through our Santa Barbara Marketing Internship, and spent her first summer out of college assisting us in the 805, Santa Monica, and every where our Summer Nights events took place as one of our Summer Marketing Interns. She's been an outstanding addition to the team, not only providing good community engagement at our street team table, but helping gather, write, and photograph content for articles and newsletters.
KCRW's August Volunteer of the Month
Meet Matt Moore! Four years ago, Matt began his time as a Summer Marketing Intern and has been holding it down in the studio as a production assistant for Garth Trinidad every other Friday night since. His calm and patient demeanor, along with his sharp attention to detail and willingness to jump in when needed, always made him stand out over the years.
KCRW's July Volunteer of the Month
Meet Linda Davis! If you've ever called the station in the morning, your call was most likely answered by her with genuine care and attention to detail. She's patient, funny, and exhibits a warm friendliness that permeates the office. She's ready to roll with any project that comes up and is always coming in with the newspaper for the day to be informed of current events. For her dedication and commitment, she's our July Volunteer of the Month! Here's Linda in her own words...
What Would You Change About Your Neighborhood?
LA is a funny place. The East Side can seem like a different world than the West, and can take half a lifetime to get to during rush hour. Living in the nation’s most populous county, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the millions of other Angelenos as we pass each other on the freeway or in the grocery store. You might think you have nothing in common with someone on the other side of town, or within your own apartment complex.
KCRW's March Volunteer of the Month
Meet Leonard! He joined the team as a bright-eyed Santa Monica College intern this past fall, and ever since has been steadily on a rise of growing into the KCRW family! He exhibited a strong work ethic as an intern, and his generous nature and careful attention-to-detail shined through each interaction with a listener or member. As a production assistant, Leonard always goes above and beyond his role to cover a show so a DJ won't be left without any support.
KCRW's February Volunteer of the Month
Meet Brittney Portlock! She's been a crucial addition to our volunteer events crew, our hospitality team, DJ liasion, and most recently, the in-studio production assistants team. Her spirited, genuine, and good-natured personality is always such a pleasure to work with. Her dedication and expertise is invaluable to us. For these reasons and more, she's our February Volunteer of the Month! Here's Britt in her own words: Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
