The morning after, peel
Non-drinkers, you all can sit this one out. This is for the people who may have bought this newspaper at the liquor store. The people who enjoy a cold beer, a glass of wine, or shot of liquor. Actually, let me be very specific. This is for the people who sometimes have one too many cold beers, glasses of wine, or shots of liquor. Full disclosure. Yes, I am a personal trainer. Yes, I am a nutritionist. But yes, I do enjoy drinking alcohol.
Leave us alone, 2020!
One thing that I’ve learned from 2020 is that rules don’t seem to matter anymore. You can walk into a bank wearing a mask these days! We’ve heard that rules are made to be broken, but I bet we never saw this coming. If only foresight was 2020 then maybe we could have better prepared for 2020. Perhaps we wouldn’t have spent Dec. 31, 2019, partying like it was 1999. Maybe 2019 would have been spent preparing for some sort of apocalyptic-like event. But foresight isn’t 2020.
The reason I recover quickly
Several years ago, while playing football I broke my hand. This was my third time breaking that hand, so I knew it right at the moment of impact. I had been down this road before, and I knew the procedure. Go to the doctor. Get x-rays. Confirm break. Get casted. Listen to the doctor say that it will take six to eight weeks to heal and that my season is over. Laugh. Wait for the doctor to ask what’s funny. Tell him that I’ll be healed and back on the football field in four weeks.
Herbs activate anti-inflammatory response
FEDERALSBURG — When I first met my wife I didn’t cook. Except hot dogs. I was a master chef in the culinary art of hot dogs. I could boil, fry, microwave, and even grill them. I thought my range was pretty impressive. But unfortunately for my wife, this meant that the majority of the cooking fell on her. I told her that I would do all of the cleaning, washing, folding, and ironing. I just didn’t want to cook.

Beet your blood pressure
PRESTON — Two and a half years ago I was approached by someone who was looking to become one of my clients. She informed me that her job was having a Biggest Loser contest, and she wanted to have an edge on her competition. She also felt that having a personal trainer would provide her the motivation and accountability to remain consistent with exercising. I sat down with her and gave her the same assessment that I give all of my clients before beginning a workout regiment.
Don't Shoot
PRESTON — I had a conversation with my best friend who happens to be one of the many scientists researching COVID-19. When I asked him if there had been any progress with slowing this thing down, he said no. I asked him if there was any truth in what I heard about heat killing the virus. Again, he answered, no. He informed me that there were certain parts of the world that had hotter climates, but a high number of COVID-19 cases.
Know Your Position
PRESTON — As a nutritionist, master herbalist, and personal trainer, people come to me to become healthy and to get in shape. When I tell them that my focus is overall health, they don’t understand to what extent. I don’t stop at just physical health. As a boxing coach and competitor, I also deal with mental and competitive health. Accomplishing any goal is going to take a certain degree of mental toughness and competitiveness. I learned this lesson at a very young age.

PRESTON — Stop reading for a moment. I want you to try something. If you are near a television I want you to pick up the remote control. Find some random show or movie that you’ve never seen. Now push the pause button. (If you can’t figure out how to pause live TV contact your nearest millennial) Based off of the still picture try to figure out the plot. Doesn’t make sense, does it? Of course not! You don’t know the backstory. You don’t know what led up to what you are currently seeing.
Cortisol has caught us all
PRESTON — A couple days ago my fourteen-year-old son told me he was stressed out. While suppressing my laughter, I found myself caught between trying to determine if I should respond with sarcasm or compassion. What could possibly be happening to cause this kid to be stressed? X-Box not working? Weak Wi-Fi signal? Lost your air pods? I decided to ask him what was causing his stress.
Mental Muscle
PRESTON — One day I decided to do an exercise with one of my clients to show the power of the mind, and how it directly affects the body. I typically have her warm up with a ten-minute jog on the treadmill, or calisthenics. So, she was surprised when she arrived and I told her to head straight to the weight rack, and grab two ten-pound dumbbells. Then I had her follow me to the backroom of the gym where the group classes are held.
The not so new normal: Thanks coronavirus
PRESTON — Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Is this what our lives have come to now? Thank you, coronavirus, for redefining normalcy. Thank you for quarantining a bunch of socially awkward people who only know how to be social on social media. Thank you for locking down a group of social butterflies who are only used to returning to their cocoons once they are done “peopleing.” Thank you for forcing us to stay home to binge watch documentaries on Netflix about tigers.

Major opposition to banning smoking on campus has prompted the Students Association to ask the college to reverse the move. “The message from students is clear; the majority of students, both smokers and non-smokers, do not support the idea of a smoke-free campus but would prefer to have enforced, designated areas to smoke,” Students’ Association President Deijanelle Simon said in a public announcement in the Student Commons on Nov. 23.

CAQ wins majority in Quebec election
Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau was at Ottawa City Hall to answer questions regarding the use of recreational marijuana for off-duty officers. Bordeleau has made it clear that Ottawa police officers that are off-duty will be allowed to use the substance just as long as they are “fit for duty.” “An individual, an officer, needs to be fit for duty when showing up for work. We have different assessment methods to be able to determine whether that person is fit for duty or not,” said Bordeleau.

Several students experienced unusually slow internet speeds on campus throughout the first two weeks of school. Complaints have been rolling in via Twitter and students are not happy with the WiFi speeds experienced on campus, taking minutes to load a single webpage and even longer for downloads.

Was that Black History Month?
Algonquin’s recognition and awareness for Black History Month has been embarrassing. Five years ago, throughout the college in February, week-long events would span the month, highlighting different black cultures each day. Beards are still a trend
Usually the first indication that a boy is going through puberty is the sight of hair growing on their cheeks and chin. He is presented with two choices — shave it, or grow a beard. And if the numbers of men sporting beards around campus is any indication, more of them are choosing that last option. But as many sizes and colors of beards there are, keeping them groomed is something their owners all have in common.
