1 Background Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes a heavy health burden worldwide [1]. Chronic hepatitis B poses a risk for long-term complications such as cirrhosis and cancer, a risk that can be reduced by treatment with nucleot(s)ide analogs [2]. HBV has nine genotypes (A−I) with relatively distinct geographical distribution, differing from each other by at least 8% of the ≈3200 nucleotides that comprise the genome.
